Preface
one wonders how we learn from our past if our historical legacy is little more than a series of inaccuracies passed from one generation to the next. Christian J. Buys, 19861
National attention riveted on northwestern Colorado in the fall of 1879 when U.S. troops from Fort Fred Steele in Wyoming Territory fought a pitched battle with Ute Indians in an isolated Rocky Mountain valley in Colorado. Called the White River Expedition, the military detail led by Major Thomas T. Thornburgh was sent to arrest insurgent Ute Indian leaders at the White River Agency, Colorado. The expedition marched over one hundred fifty miles in nine days, September 21 to September 29, 1879, before it reached Milk Creek, twenty-two miles short of its destination on the Ute Reservation. There, just inside the northern border of the reservation, troops met armed resistance from a Ute force; a quiet valley erupted in prolonged and bloody conflict. On the same day that engagement began, Utes killed all of the male employees at the agency and took women and children hostage. Details of the outbreak at the agency, known as the Meeker Massacre, and subsequent changes in Indian policy have been covered in a number of publications, but I focus on the drama of the hardships endured and courage of the members of the expedition.
