The Politics of Environment in Southeast Asia
Southeast Asia has undergone extremely rapid industrialisation and economic growth. This in turn has placed great pressure on the local environment through the increased use of natural resources and higher levels of pollution and urban expansion.
This book is concerned with the growing importance of environmental issues and their relationship to broader processes of social, political and economic change in Southeast Asia. The case studies included document environmental struggles over large dams, forestry, mining, pollution and tourism. The authors draw on new approaches in social and political ecology and relate macro-theoretical frameworks to the case studies.
The growing intensity of the conflict between economic growth, social security and environmental protection in the region make Southeast Asia an especially fertile area for study. The outcome will be of lasting importance to the region. The Politics of Environment in Southeast Asia is an original and detailed contribution to this growing debate.
