How old would you be if you didnt know how old you are?

- Satchel Paige

INTRODUCTION

It was very early in the morning, when the dew still cover ed the ground with an icy haze that I was to meet him.

We were to meet under the "Buddha Tree", a large majestic Oak that spread its broad firry limbs in a field of green, just outside of a University in Western Australia.

He was reading a book, as always, nestled in a gnarled crevice of the Buddha Tree, waiting.

I watched his solitary figure intently as I walked towards the tree. The air was crisp and damp with the smell of Autumn, and I couldn't help but feel a buzz of excitement swell in my chest and throughout my body.

What would I learn today? What would he say or share with me?

As if sensing my thoughts, Matthew looked up from his serene repose and smiled. His smile was always somehow from the inside out, as though an inner light had been switched on suddenly.

I greeted him, and after a long embrace, sat down.

His eyes, as always, focused on mine with a calm intensity. Inherited from a distant Japanese relative, Matthew's eyes had a piercing, almond-shaped quality that left you feeling utterly exposed, as though he were dissecting your inner world piece by piece.

"What are you reading about?" I asked quietly.

Looking at me with eyes as old as the universe, and as deep as space, he smiled. "Our purpose in life.

**

Matthew, also known as Sol (meaning Sun in his native Spanish), was the first person to ever introduce me to the life-changing notion that I may be an Old Soul - just like him.

Since then, I've undertaken extensive research on the mysterious world of the Old Soul which I hope to provide to you in detail within this book.

Those few Old Souls I have come in contact with face-to-face, as well as those I have received the detailed stories of, have all shown 10 essential similarities. These can be identified as the tendencies to be:

1. Solitary and/or introverted.

Spiritually inclined.

Thoughtful and introspective.

Fascinated by knowledge, wisdom and truth.

Aware of the transience of life.

Able to see the bigger picture.

Not materialistic.

Mysteriously drawn to older eras, people and objects.

Old in mind, e.g. wary, tired, detached and calm.

Socially maladaptive as a child.

If you're curious to discover whether you're Old in Soul, this book is for you. If you've just discovered that you're a part of this immensely unique and gifted group of people that comprises approximately 10 - 15% of the population, this book is also for you. However, if you're not an Old Soul, but hope to learn more about the one in your life, my hopes are that this book will help you to better understand what they're all about, and why they behave so differently from the rest.

"It's No Big Deal." A Profile of The Old Soul Character.

For a minute I thought about his response. "My purpose in life", I said slowly, "is to find out why I feel so old ... even though I'm so young ." He watched me with a detached sort of kindness for a while, and answered. "It's because you're becoming an Old Soul. Just like me." There was something very strange in the air suddenly. It was a sense of dj vu, a sense of having been here before. As a whispering morning breeze blew the dead leaves from the matriarchal Oak above us, I sat wondering quietly. "What's an Old Soul?" I asked. Leaves spun softly in the air like ballet dancers. "I mean ... how can you tell if someone's an Old Soul?" Matthew leaned back against the trunk, looking pensive. "Well, they have a calm and philosophical approach to life. Nothing's a big deal to them. But you can especially tell by the depth in their eyes.

**

Firstly, it's good for us to define what the Old Soul temperament is like in detail, in order for you to understand it better. For instance: what does the Old Soul cherish and value, dislike and avoid, and feel about themselves? What can be said about their tastes, aspirations and goals in life? You will find all this information in this chapter, plus more.

I ) Likes.

A lot can be said about the Old Soul's preferences in life.

Nearly all of the collective knowledge and experience that I've gathered on this topic has shown that the basic desire of the Old Soul is personal and spiritual fulfillment , whether that be by love, by occupation or by intellectual realization. If you're an Old Soul, you will find that you:

- Tend to prefer mental and/or emotional satisfaction when working, rather than fame or success.

- Tend to value wisdom, knowledge and understanding both in yourself and others.

- Tend to gravitate towards philosophical, humanitarian or artistic pursuits.

- Tend to be attracted to philosophy, mysticism, metaphysics and the occult as ways of reaching personal fulfillment.

- Tend to prefer the company of a few like-minded people, or else prefer habitual solitude.

- Tend to prefer pacifism to drama, and minimalism to consumerism.

- Tend to have old-fashioned tastes (e.g. old movies, old people, old objects, old music etc.)

Because the Old Soul tends to see very few things on the physical plane as being very much of "a big deal", they like focusing their energy towards spiritually and emotionally rewarding pursuits.

II) Dislikes.

The Old Soul finds that they never truly despise anything. Rather, they tend to have a dislike for:

- Ignorant and/or foolish behavior.

- The company of dramatic and frantic people.

- Too many time-consuming social connections.

- Unnecessary pressure, demands and expectations.

- Too many material attachments.

- General affairs of the world, e.g. politics, debates, careers, money, etc.

- Gossip and other trivialities.

Essentially, anything too worldly, too short-sighted and too mentally and emotionally exhausting is shunned by the Old Soul. Like an old person, the Old Soul is easily tired by pressure, tension and conflict. To them, the matters of everyday life are unsurprising, commonplace and inconsequential in the greater scheme of things.

III ) Tribulations.

"This world is not my home I'm just a-passin' through

My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue

The angels beckon me from heaven's open door

And I can't feel at home in this world anymore."

- Albert E. Brumley

The Old Soul, however, is not free from problems, issues and burdens. Just like everyone else, Old Souls are not imm une to the afflictions of everyday life.

T he biggest issue for the Old Soul isn't whether he can pay the rent, get a job promotion or retrieve the affection of a lost lover. Rather, his greatest tribulation is to do with existence .

It's not uncommon for the Old Soul to experience some measure of depression, apathy or existential lethargy when it comes to living everyday life. After all, if physical existence loses its star-spangled gleam, and everyday affairs lose their burning importance, what is the point of living a dull life?

In this instance, the Old Soul who lacks a fundamental meaning, hobby or passion, falls into a state of existential crisis.

If the everyday earthly issues that the Old Soul has don't dominate or hijack them, as they do to others, what is there worth fighting for? If other people are predictable and habitually create havoc, what's the point of existing in such a burdensome society? If everything is passing by, what is the point of becoming attached to anything?
