Introduction
Spiritual Growth as a Process
Spiritual and personal growth is a process, it happens one day at a time. Each day we carve out a few minutes of quiet time in order to remove ourselves from the pressures and anxieties of everyday life, to calm down and tune in on the deeper pulse of living. When we do this on a regular basis, we build up a reservoir of inner quiet that we can draw on throughout our day. The daily readings in this book will help you to focus your mind. Our souls are waiting for us to know them and through them the soul that contains all life. No one can know soul for us. Soul discovery is

our own brave and courageous voyage. We voyage on the waters of life the way Odysseus rode on the sea; taming fears and drives, resisting the temptation that would lead to self-destruction so that that we can ultimately arrive safely home. The ancient scriptures grappled with our most fundamental issues. They teach us how to live ethically with sanity, values and meaning so that we do not get lost. They help us, through story and metaphor, to face our weaknesses and conquer our fears so that we can eventually get out of our own way and allow the light of soul or spirit or God to shine through.
We can only solve our lives for today. We can only live well, be happy, make ends meet or do a job for today. Just for today we can do what would confound and immobilize us if we felt we had to do it forever. We can only live, do or be one day at a time. We should resolve, within ourselves, that we will live as well as we can for today. Asking more of ourselves is unfair, asking less is unwise. Just for today is our best path out of yesterday, into tomorrow and for living in the presence of soul energy.

destructive patterns of thinking, feeling, and behavior, engaged in a compulsive or neurotic relationship with living. Negative self-thoughts can lead to a negative self-image and conversely positive self-thoughts can help to build a positive self-image. The way that we think about ourselves or the inner dialogue that we carry on within our own minds can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Describing this is a theory called "brain set." A person with a positive brain set will train her mind to identify life circumstances that support that positive set, that is, she will be quick to identify and value those experiences that are helpful and support her positive set. She will see as lucky what another person may not read as such. A person with a negative brain set will be quick to notice and take in those experiences that will match it. Research now shows us that visualizing positive experiences in the mind over and over again can actually elevate our T-cell, T-helper/T-suppressor cell ratio, thus strengthening the immune system, our first line of defense against disease. Daily readings, quiet time, journaling or sharing ourselves in trusting, supportive groups are proven tools for strengthening our physical, emotional and mental health.
