Introduction to the New Edition
Is there a more treacherous and ambivalent virtue than that of loyalty? From the outset of the human odyssey, no matter the cultural setting, planet-wide, historical narrative and imaginative literature have placed the power, affection, travail, and subtle trap of loyalty at center stage. From a seemingly endless fictional and nonfictional reportage, storied instances of the conflicted experience of loyalty abound. One need only to recall a few, for example, the personally and militarily embattled figure of Achilles in The Iliad as a paramount instance of how one person's loyalty to another can wreak havoc in every direction.
