While the honor of introducing Harry Burrell's extraordinary study of Finnegans Wake falls to me as Bernard Benstock's editorial successor, nothing I could say would do the book any more justice than Berni's remarkswritten when he enthusiastically approved the book for publication, and now reproduced for this foreword.

A certain amount of historical background is necessary if one is to demonstrate how important an achievement this book is, how significant a contribution to Finnegans Wake scholarship. The assumption of a "central thesis" or "contained narrative" in Finnegans Wake existed almost as a given in the early days of scholarly explication of the work, but except for rumors about the possibility, nothing emerged in the 1950s and 1960s, and it has since been assumed that no such overextensive pattern would ever be uncovered.
