Bhagwan Buddha is more relevant today than ever.
Go monks, and travel for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of compassion for the world, for the benefit and welfare of happiness of gods and men. No two of you go the same way. Teach the doctrine, monks, which is fine in its beginning, middle and end, with its meaning and later, sheer the whole and, proclaim the pure holy life. There are beings, naturally of little passion, which are languishing for lack of hearing the Doctrine; they will understand it.
With these words, the Buddha dispatched the first 60 monks from Sarnath, he had converted and ordained after his Enlightenment at Bodh Gaya.
Therefore, sending his followers to preach his Dhamma was the start of Buddhist tourism, credited to Buddha himself.

GLOSSARY
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Buddhist India Rediscovered is a compilation of Buddhist sites (including caves, monasteries, temples and archaeological sites) in India from a tourism point of view.
I have no regrets confessing that I am not a historian or an archaeologist, a research student, or an intellectual, but a common citizen of India who is very much in love with her country.
Having worked with travel agents and tour operators Trade Wings Limited in Mumbai for 20 years, I had several opportunities to travel and interact with many kinds of people. Over a period of time, I developed the habit of collecting and jotting down all the interesting information I gleaned from my travels and rewriting it in simple words to promote tourism.
I thank M/S Jaico Publishing House for the great success my first two books India: A Travel Guide and India: A Divine Destination have achieved.
My profession, tourism promotion, for which traveling was indispensable has now become my passion. What people need now is the chance to travel. Secular growth unites people across countries and continents, and what better way to make people meet and get to know each other and their cultures than to promote tourism.
Today, the entire world is looking for peace, peace through religions, amity and the brotherhood of nations and a lot of attention is focussed on Buddha Dhamma. India is the birthplace of Buddha and Buddhism. Buddha made known to us the four Noble Truths and the eightfold path of righteousness. It was he who taught us the sanctity of life and to strive for Nirvana as the ultimate goal. India is the only country to witness Buddhahood with the help of temples, monuments, caves, structural remains etc. India, where this great teacher of humanity was born, still bears witness to his holy life, and a visit to the Buddhist places of pilgrimages can uplift one's mind and soul.
Many books are available on Atthamathathanani, i.e. eight places of divine significance declared by Buddha himself, written by Indian as well as by foreign authors. But apart from known places, there are many sites which still need the attention and care of the historians and archaeologists. A few sites, neglected as they are, have fallen to ruins due to the rentless attack of nature and will be lost, if we do not take immediate action, forever. I have not yet come across any book which has the information of all Buddhist sites from all over India in a single book. Since, the purpose of the book is to provide 'the whereabouts' (which I could collect so far) of the sites which might arouse the interest of the readers, historians, researchers and archaeologists.
While traveling across the country to collect information, a few people were very helpful but some were just not ready to help. We inherit the Guru Shishya parampara, knowledge should be preserved and spread for the benefit of the mankind. Many a times, I had to stop writing due to uncertainty and non-cooperation from officials and educationalists. I must mention here my colleague Mr. Sidharth, an activist from Haryana, who is running a campaign 'Save Buddha, Save the Stupa' (refer www.thebuddhistforum.com). His continuous moral support has helped me bring this book to the final stage of print.
I must thank Mr. Shirodkar from Kolhapur for his careful reading and suggestions; Ms. Shipa Wadekar from Pune, who traveled with me and provided photos; Mr. PP Ramachandra, from Mumbai for helping me access rare books from Asiatic Society in Mumbai, and many others who I met met while traveling. And my friends and relatives can now finally take a breath of peace, because for the last five years all I could talk about was the Buddha.
The book is blessed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama who has kindly written a beautiful Foreword for this book. I will carry a debt of gratitude for the office of His Holiness, Ms. Gary Dolma from Tibetan Parliament Dharamshala and Mr. Tenzin Gelek from the scrutiny committee of the office of His Holiness.
And finally, I would like to thank to M/S Jaico Publishing House not only for ensuring the great success of my first two books India: A Travel Guide and India: A Divine Destination but also for helping this book, Buddhist India Rediscovered, reach the readers.
