To the memory and spirit of Dennis J. Valdez, a man who lived one hundred lifetimes in forty years, and died too young doing what he loved mostflying off mountains.

Dennis was a real-life hero, an explorer, an artist, an innovator and a warrior of the highest caliberand he left deep footprints where few humans dare to tread.

He served this world in many capacitiesas a naval officer and combat veteran who led covert missions in the special warfare community, surface warfare officer working jointly with the German and Japanese navies, leader of rescue missions to retrieve people stranded on impassable mountaintops, advisor to numerous families on kidnapping and ransom cases that successfully recovered many loved ones, triathlete, mountain climber, racecar driver, videographer, photographer extraordinaire, elite scuba diver, skydiver, BASE jumper and wingsuit flyer. He traversed vast expanses of this planet, not the least of which included driving a motorcycle from Georgia to the southern tip of South America, crisscrossing every country along the way. His insatiable quest for learning drove him to speak multiple languages and enabled him to share his gifts across many cultures.

Above all things, though, Dennis was a kind and generous persona stalwart spirit who inspired all who knew him to embrace their dreams and savor life.

Even though he has departed this world, his fire still burns hot and his legend lives on in the hearts of all those who were blessed with his friendship.

Thank you, Dennis. You are loved and missed.

As to the task of writing it, and molding it into a fluid story that is rooted in important ideas, I have some folks to thank; first, Bruce Nathan, my father, who tirelessly edited this work through multiple drafts, calling upon his years of experience as an editor for The Associated Press to transform this story into a worthwhile experience. Just when the world seemed dark and gray, and the prospect of happiness a dying ember, he wandered to the edge of the pain and looked beyond. The shadowy landscape was fraught with fear and doubt, but already the pain of not changing was too great to endure, so he closed his eyes and leapt. To his surprise, in his surrender, he landed softly on the bottom, still alive, and on the far side of the darkness shone a single ray of light. It was bright like a diamond, crafted of color and love, and it vibrated with the song of eternity. He crawled toward it, feeling his way, more hopeful with each moment, and the ray of light grew into a rising sun. Just beyond that sun, on the far side of the horizon, was the village of Gylodon .

Prologue

From a watery womb, we plunge into the mud of mortality. Grasping for a handholdor any kind of anchorwe seek balance, as our feet slip to and fro, sinking into the depths of adversity, challenge and pain. It is here, in the classroom of earthly life, that we rise and fall, adapt and grow, die and live again. Our existence is an ever-evolving storylineand the only constant is change .

Somewhere, amid the chaos of our daily lives, there is a place of peace, a locale of unrivaled beauty and fulfillment. It lives just beyond our view, obscured by a veil of physical pain, fear, ego and our own wandering minds. Sometimes its beauty graces us with its presence, and we are touched; but, alas, our memories are short, and the experience is fleeting.

As we ride through this adventure, we are active participants, quiet observers, and far too oftenunconscious autopilots, asleep at the wheel.

But every now and then we awaken from our unconscious daydreams. We look up from our work stations, turn away from our computers and gaze out the window; it is then, with uncommon clarity, that we find ourselves in the throes of warheld captive in an invisible prisonand the battle is for nothing less than our personal sovereignty . Like indentured servants, we follow the designated routineworking to earn money while striving for sustenance. At the same time, our consciousness is under attack from all directions by forces that seek to control our minds and amputate our hearts. Never in the history of humankind has consciousness pollution been so rampantshaping our reality through an endless slew of media portals, while inhibiting our basic self-awareness. Our lives have become blinding tornados of constant distraction, obscuring our most fundamental gifts.
