Chapter 1: An Explanation of Enneagram
You may be wondering just what Enneagram is. For starters, it is better known as The Enneagram of Personality, and its name stems from the Greek words enna , denoting the number nine, and grmma , which means written or drawn. This system is an attempt to pattern the individuals mind, and here, it is to be appreciated and imparted as nine interrelated personality typesor better yet, as Archetypes. It is based on the belief that each of us is born with a particular psycho-emotional patterna type-specific pattern of thinking, feeling, and being in the world.
Simply said, the Enneagram contains nine distinct categories, with each signifying an expansive perspective and an archetype that reverberates with the way individuals contemplate, experience, and accomplish matters concerning themselves, others, and the world. It is so much more than a personality test that offers answers to questions about core personality traits. It digs more deeply into the essential motives, defense mannerisms, and worries that frequently lie in the instinctual portion of our personalities.
Your Enneagram primary type is like the home base on which we set up our perspective of individuals, incorporations, and growth of our own self. It is your core, but it isnt absolute. You and everyone else may find that your core includes traits from the other wings, and perhaps even from non-tangential types. After taking the test, most people usually find one type that stands out from the others when it comes to describing them, but its possible that two or even three types could be the cores of one person.
In the business context, Enneagram personality typing is commonly exercised as a technique to gain an insight into an offices social dealings. Within theology, however, it can present as a trail towards a developed state of existence, spirit, and even enlightenment. In cooperation and some other contexts, they say it can aid in self-perception, empathy, and self-advancement.
The Enneagram has been extensively endorsed in both assisting commercial organizations and religious ones. The Enneagram is an attempt by several psychologists and other researchers to analyze the entire human beingin body, thought, and feeling. Many different companies use the analytical capabilities of the tests, but it can also assist you as an individual both in understanding yourself and your actions, and in allowing empathy to form. The latter should come about naturally after youve gained mastery over the former.
Enneagram in the modern era is believed to be a typology, a way to see humans through the lens of their archetypes. But what this truly boils down to is that it is an attempt by people to realize things about themselves and others. It is a way to better empathize with your thoughts, actions, and feelings, all with the aim of forming better relationships with your family, friends, coworkers, and others.
Chapter 2: The Nine Different Types
Before starting this chapter, I would like to make a disclaimer: there are many ways to view personalities, and there is no correct way. Moreover, if you, the reader, do not feel like any of these personality types suits you, there is no need to worry. The Enneagram cannot prove that you are something that you are not. As with many other tests, the test at the end of this book seeks to tally your answers in order to determine how many correspond to each of the type. Using the result of this tally, the test would conclude that the highest scoring out of all the types are what make up your personality. It is thus impersonal and relies solely on your own honest responses.
There are some things to know when looking at the nine distinct types. The first is the Stretch point, also known as The Direction of Disintegration. The line pointing towards ones core type is seen as the direction of stretch, challenge, or stress. Under pressure, an individual might revert to the less-healthy aspects of this type, opening the doorway to potential unhealthy expression, neurosis, and magnification of stress. However, an intentional move towards the high or positive side of that type may create positive stress and stretch, balancing the less-effective tendencies or reactions of the core type of the individual.
