ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Foremost is Stephanie Brown, Ph.D., whose vision helped open my eyes. I also wish to acknowledge my friends and colleagues on the Board of the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA). They have supported and challenged me as only a healthy family can.
Finally, I want to thank Carole Remboldt and the Johnson Institute for recognizing the need to advance the debate about co-dependence. Their support, and the editorial help of Pamela Espeland, have helped clarify my thinking throughout this book.

PREFACE
Co-dependence is both a legitimate psychological concept and an important human disorder. It represents a fascinating effort to understand a type of dysfunctional human behavior which is disturbingly prevalent. Therapists and other helping professionals in the chemical dependence (CD) field have found it to be a valuable framework for evaluating and treating the family dysfunction surrounding many chemically dependent clients.
