Published originally as part of C. Eric Lincolns series on the black religious experience, Is God a White Racist? is a landmark critique of the black churchs treatment of evil and the nature of suffering. In this powerful examination of the early liberation methodology of James Cone, J. Deotis Roberts, and Joseph Washington, among others, Jones questions whether their foundation for black Christian theismthe belief in an omnibenevolent God who has dominion over human historycan provide an adequate theological foundation to effectively dismantle the economic, social, and political framework of oppression.Seeing divine benevolence as part of oppressions mechanism of disguise, Jones argues that black liberation theologians must adopt a new theism that is informed by humanism and its principle of the functional ultimacy of wo/man, where human choice and action determine whether our condition is slavery or freedom.

PREFACE
Is God a White Racist? (IGWR) personified my plan for black liberation and my uncommon religious conversion from black Christian fundamentalism to black religious humanism. To explain the rationale for this book's republication and its "what, why, and how" recommends that I proceed here more or less autobiographically, beginning at its beginning, contextualizing its form and content, and laying out its message and method, its motivation, and mentors. IGWR was conceived when I was a teenager in Louisville, Kentucky, the city of my birth. At that time, Billy Graham was my idol, and my spiritual manna was the fundamentalist beliefs and values of my grandfather, Henry Wise Jones, Sr., the pastor of the Green Street Baptist Church. Enamored of the objective certainty and predictive truth of the biblical prophecy that he had taught me, I became a licensed Baptist preacher, affirming Christianity/Whiteanity's1 theology of "the harder the cross, the brighter the crown," announcing that we were living in the last days, and that Armageddon was upon us. With the absolute confidence that absolute certitude affords, I would unerringly exegete one passage symbolically , another literally , then skillfully and effortlessly splice from dis-
