This e-book is an excerpt of my big pointbook, Acupuncture Points Handbook. I have removed indications ifthey do not make sense without the information on how acupunctureworks, which is located at the beginning of the book.

The purpose of this book is to show you thetop five acupuncture points. Some might disagree on my pointselection. These are the points that you will see used inacupuncture clinics everywhere. These points are also effective foracupressure.

There are 400 acupuncture points that arecommonly taught in acupuncture schools. In addition to this, thereare other types of acupuncture, which also have their own points. It would not be hard to find 1,000 total acupuncture points on thebody. This is one of the reasons that sham acupuncture works. Itis very difficult to insert a needle and not affect an acupuncturepoint. Even treating close to the point is often enough tostimulate the point and activate its functions.

Acupuncture for Pain

Acupuncture treats pain by restoring healthyblood flow. Pain is caused by tissue that is not getting oxygen.Acupuncture activates the meridians, which are like energy highwaysin your body. You can stimulate a point on the ankle that thenopens the meridian where it is located. So if the Spleen meridianis treated, the Spleen meridian opens up and circulation isrestored. If the Stomach meridian is treated, anything on theStomach meridian, or nearby, will benefit from improved blood flow. This is a very simplistic explanation, because acupuncture works inmany ways to relieve pain. Points on the ear can be treated torelieve pain also. The area on the ear that is associated with thearea that hurts is treated.

Internal Diseases

Internal diseases are treated using Chinesemedicine diagnosis. Every symptom is associated with an underlyingimbalance of an organ. For example, indigestion is related to yourStomach, so when points on the Stomach meridian are treated, yourdigestion is regulated.

Emotional Issues

Emotional issues can be treated via the organsystem also. Stress is associated with the Liver in Chinesemedicine. Treating Liver 3 will relax your body and relieve stress.Anxiety and insomnia are often associated with the Heart energy, soany points that are chosen that strengthen or regulate the Heart, like Pericardium 6, in this book, will help to relieve insomnia andanxiety.

Locating Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points are located by findinglandmarks nearby, which are usually bones. A Cun is pronouncedsoon. That is the width of your thumb. The Cun is used to locatethe points. The hand is used to measure areas on the body to locatethe points.

The image below shows how a Cun is measured. It is the distance of your thumb knuckle. If you are measuring onsomeone who is a lot larger or smaller than you are, you would usethat persons thumb size as a guide.

This is one of the most commonly used pointson the body. It is used to treat any issue on the head. It is oftencombined with Liver 3 to strongly relax the body and balance energycirculation, and relieve pain anywhere in the body. This treatmentis called Four Gates.

Large Intestine 4 is indispensable to treatallergies, and colds and flu. Combine it with Large Intestine 11,Stomach 36, and Stomach 40. Treat every two hours. It boosts theimmune system so your body can clear viruses. It treats allergiesby regulating and strengthening the immune system, so your bodystops overreacting. This is the first choice for acupressure totreat headaches. Acupressure is very effective on this point.

Large Intestine 4 is the point most commonlymentioned to treat headaches. It is called the master point for thehead. Any head issue can be relieved by using this point.

  • Very calming emotionally, often combined with Heart 7to treat anxiety

This point regulates the stomach, as well asthe heart, and the entire chest. It is used to treat anxiety, insomnia, emotional disorders, chest pain, palpitations, and chestfullness.

Clinical Notes

This point is one of the most importantpoints on the body. Acupressure is very effective on this point, there are wrist bands for pregnant women to use for morningsickness that apply gentle pressure to this point all day torelieve nausea. I would recommend alternating wrists for this. Thepoints will not be as responsive if they are continuallystimulated. You can put the wrist band on one arm for the day or asneeded, then switch to the other arm the next day. Acupuncture isvery effective to treat the causes of morning sickness.
