Introduction
As a beginner in Qigong gymnastic, the first question you may want to ask yourself is; what exactly is Qigong? This Chinese word can be broken down into two parts; Qi and Gong. Qi , pronounced as chee , is a concept that has a long history, which also means Life energy. Traditional Chinese scientist and doctors have been researching Life energy for over a millennium. The other part of Qigong - Gong, simply means work. Qigong can therefore be described as working with essential life energy.
The main principle behind Qigong practices is the ability to learn how to become sensitive to lifes energy in order to improve our health.
The second question is; how does Qigong improve our health?
Qigong is linked directly to traditional Chinese practices with some principles, though you may not have to go to school to learn Qigong, having a foundation of this practice will help you understand the skills. According to the promoters of Qigong, the human body comprises of various energy channels that run through different parts and distribute the vital Qi (life). These paths are known as meridians and science has proven the existence of such. The practice of Qigong will therefore help us become aware of these meridians through the various breathing, relaxation, and gentle movement techniques offered by Qigong gymnastics.
When you stretch the meridians through Qigong gymnastics, energy will flow much better and easier, thus clearing all paths and blockages that might have accumulated over a long period of time. Present modern activities cause the body to absorb so much pressure but when the paths of flow of energy are cleared, you will increase your bodys natural ability to prevent illnesses, and you can achieve better clarity of mind.
The practices of Qigong have been modified over the decades and it is of no surprise that western medical practices now adopt the ancient practices in therapeutic treatments to deal with certain ailments and infections. While western medical practices often rely on symptoms to detect illnesses, ancient Chinese practices often rely on energy paths to restore normalcy to the body.
The reason most people take interest is Qigong is because they want to manage stress in their lives. There are lots of good reasons you want to put stress under control; first of all, researches have shown that between 55 and 90% of illnesses are directly linked to stress. Limiting stress will not only help save your life, it can be the secret to your happiness.
Qigong can stop stress at different levels. Relaxing and breathing training for instance, will help shift you from poor breathing habits; the practices will also help clam your agitated nervous system. As you feel the stress leaving your body gradually, it will appear as if you have just unlocked a powerful health secret from the practice.
Qigong will also increase your ability to let go . Your state of mind is very important when you are practicing Qigong. You need to meditate as you practice Qigong, because having a relaxed state of mind is a critical step in learning the act of letting go. When you mind enters a relaxed state, you can easily do away with those thoughts, judgments, and worries that you have been carrying around for the entire day. As you gain control over your breathing and relaxation, you will be able to control your conscious and sub-conscious mind, which means you will have absolute control of your own mind.
In todays world, most people, especially the younger generations are not in control of their own minds any longer. Peer pressure, and demands from society have eroded the mind power of most people, hence, they want to act and behave in such a way that society accepts. When you do things to satisfy society instead of your conscience, you end up getting stressed and feel worthless, especially if you fail to meet up with daily demands.
With Qigong, vital information in your memory will not be lost just because you let go of the stress. The gentle effect of Qigong practices will stimulate your mind and help you reclaim your healthy mental state. You need to ensure that you practice Qigong with high expectations, but it will take a while for you to reach that point.
Chapter 1- The three fundamental aspects (3 intentful corrections) of Qigong - mindful adjustment (Posture), breathing, and mental state.
There are three main concepts or principles that Qigong is concerned with, these are:
- Posture
- Breathing
- Mental state
