There is too much touristy sightseeing in the world these days, and not enough pilgrimageintentionally joining and being joined by Jesus and his companions in daily discipleship. In his conversations, prayers, and reflections while walking on the old pilgrim trail to Canterbury, Nelson Kraybill makes pilgrims of us all.
Eugene H. Peterson, Professor Emeritus of Spiritual Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, B.C.
Nelson Kraybill has a way with words, matching the elegant simplicity of the Pilgrims' Way. I relished every word of this book and often thought of biblical journeys, of John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, of the film Babette's Feast, and of other stirring tales, including Martyrs Mirror. This book goes on my shelf with those classic tales of longing for God. I look forward to using On the Pilgrims' Way in the course I teach at Goshen College, "The Literature of Spiritual Reflection and Social Action." The class can go on this spiritual pilgrimage with Nelson and explore Jesus' call, "Follow me."
Shirley Hershey Showalter, President, Goshen College, Goshen, Indiana

As one of the pilgrimage partners for this book, I didn't anticipate the misery of unremitting rain and the pain of feet sodden in a whole day's walk. Neither could I have predicted the intense relief and comfort of sharing hot drink, fresh bread, and rest at our lunchtime inn. These hikers' experiences pose vivid parallels both to uncertainties of the Christian way and to delights of communion with fellow travelers and with the Lord.
Nelson Kraybill reminds us that the joy of the Christian journey is that we don't travel this way alone. We go together as a pilgrim band, fitting our feet into the steps of our Master. Pilgrims' conversation truly is "a seedbed for growing faith" (page 16). As you read this book, you will overhear and want to join in such fertile talk.
Just reading the chapter titles entices one into this volume: risking, doubting, feasting, choosing, valuing, taking couragethese are signposts pointing the Christian pilgrims' way. If you are new to Christian faith, this book will help you chart the way ahead. If you are an experienced hiker or a weary walker, it will confirm the past and give you courage to carry on.
Eleanor Kreider, Regents Park College, Oxford, England
