Foreword
Missionaries, the apostle remarked in a famous passage (2 Cor. 5:1620) are "ambassadors for Christ." Their ambassadorial tasks include formulating a message ("the message of reconciliation") and conveying it through persuasion and entreaty. But good ambassadors also develop imaginative empathy and good listening. They learn a perceptive detachment enabling them to discern the unspoken (and often unrecognized) assumptions of the people to whom they are sent. If they do this well, if they "regard no one from a human point of view,'' they convey a message people can understand. Their message is "news," for it speaks to the real circumstances of the hearers.
C. Norman Kraus is a missionary theologian. His major recent writings (Jesus Christ Our Lord and God Our Savior) have been enriched by his encounter with the people and civilization of Japan. But The Community of the Spirit, which I am pleased to welcome in this revised edition, has emerged from his missionary encounter with North America. Here is a learned and lucid restatement of the Christian message that grows out of Kraus' sensitive, ambassadorial listening the leitmotif of modern North American lifeindividualism.
