The Fires of Transformation
FOREWORD FROM THE EDITOR
The purpose of Kundalini Yoga is transformation .Yogi Bhajan
A t different points in our lives, all of us go through the proverbial fires of transformation. For some it's a break-up, for others it's the death of a loved one, and still for others it's the loss of a job, or a personal health issue, or struggles with addiction. whatever the fire may be called, we all have to walk through it in order to get to the other side. This process is called transformation and it is, by nature, purifying. It used to be known as alchemy, that mysterious process in which the gross was transmuted into gold. Today we call it consciousness and like the alchemy of old, our personal transformation requires heat, pressure, and timethe purifying fires of tapas , the pressure of a sadh sangat, and the discipline of a practice over timeand a little touch of magic I call grace.
Whether it's the psychic heat we create when we burn our egos up with devotion or the physical heat we create when we do Breath of Fire for 31 minutes, each action, though radically different in its outward form, creates tapas or heatand purifies us, transforms us. Carbon doesn't become a diamond without the tremendous pressure of gravity. As Kundalini Yogis, our gravity is our lifestyle, the practices of this path. It's not easy going out into the world wearing white or covering our head. It isn't easy to change everythingwhat we eat, what we drink, what time we go to bedbut that is what's required. So, we live in a community of like-minded practitionerssadh sangatso that our new way of life is supported and so it's just that much more difficult to veer from the path. we ask for this pressure because it is this pressure that purifies us, purifies our minds and our hearts, bending the curve of self-will toward the will of the divine, toward devotion.
We've all experienced the transformative power of time, the great healer. Things that seem impossible today are the source of great laughter in the future, and what we do today can change our tomorrow. And, whether we believe it or not, what we do tomorrow can change yesterday. we can transform our stories, those things that defined us in the past and rewrite our destiny. This is the essential element of transformationthat we, ourselves, can be the agents of change within our own lives.
Kundalini Yoga inspired me to change everything. In fact, recently a friend was visiting and she said something that moved me in a way I hadn't anticipated. She said, You are the most changed person I've ever known. It's taken all the elements, all these seeds of transformation, in order to affect this change in me: the fires of loss and the tapas of discipline; the pressure of community and the willingness to dress the part, even when I didn't feel like it; and timelots of time. Nothing has happened overnight, except perhaps the gift of grace, the strength to say yes, and the willingness to agree to agree, to decideand along with that decision came the opportunity to begin again.
We hope this newest collection of kriyas and meditations inspires you to begin your own personal transformation today! Practice something new or master something familiar with Transformation: Seeds of Change for the Aquarian Age , a two-volume series that brings the tools and technologies of Level Two Teacher Training to your fingertips.
