This book is dedicated to my wife, Patti, who stood by me at every point, caring for our children, Ari and Joel, and for our home during the difficult time when I was in Germany. Her patience and fortitude are a wonder, and are admired by all who know her. May we go from strength to strength together.

Preface
In the late twentieth century, religion and politics have become inextricable. Powerful fundamentalist movements, a term one must use with misgivings, have developed not only in Christianity and Islam, but in Buddhism and Hinduism as well. Something in the nature of modernity has produced an impressive, often worrisome realignment of religious forces. Contrary to earlier prognoses of inevitable secularization and the diminution of the public force of religion, our period daily witnesses struggles over the role of religion in modernized or modernizing societies that seem to wax rather than wane in intensity. One simply cannot afford to ignore the nexus of religion and politics.
The issues are interesting, however, not only because these so-called fundamentalist movements challenge the assumptions of the liberal West. They are interesting because, as William James might have put it, they derive from live and momentous options. The relation of religious faith and ethics to contemporary public life remains controversial. Not all the options, but many of the options remain open.
Since graduate school, I have been fascinated by the interaction of religion and politics. My concern has been both descriptive and normative. The ways of both Weber and Troeltsch, of the social scientist and the social scientifically-oriented theologian, interested me. As a graduate student, I was an avid reader of Reinhold Niebuhr and some time later

of such Catholic treatments of religion and political order as are found in the writings of John Courtney Murray. Illuminating as this literature was, however, I sought, especially for normative reasons, serious Jewish treatments of the theme.
