God in the Marketplace: 45 Questions Fortune 500 Executives Ask About Faith, Life, and Business: summary, description and annotation

Aside from Experiencing God, Henry Blackaby has made his greatest impact by ministering directly to Fortune 100 and 500 CEOs, advising them on how to effectively blend their faith with their business. Out of that ministrys success comes God in the Marketplace, a book to help everyone from the front desk to the executive suite best experience Gods will in his or her work. Blackaby believes that just as Jesus had businessmen among His original disciples, so may God be calling out businesspeople today in preparation for a worldwide spiritual revival. However, while those in the marketplace may have excellent educations and access to world-class leadership seminars, they often feel inadequate in matters of spiritual influence. God in the Marketplace will help them better understand what the Bible says about integrating their Christian faith with their work lives and provide biblical answers to the common yet difficult questions that are often raised for Christians at work. Marketplace Perspectives
PREFACE
Questions, just like people, come in all sizes and shapes. There are big questions, trivial questions, brilliant questions, foolish questions, multiple-choice questions, and questions without answers. But knowing what to ask can be as important as recognizing the answer. This book is our response to questions we have frequently been asked over the years by sincere Christians seeking to live their lives in a God-honoring manner.
Christian men and women who hold influential positions in the marketplace want to know how their relationship with God practically affects their careers and their personal lives. We work with 165 Christian CEOs of Fortune 100 and 500 companies. Henry leads a monthly Bible study, God in the Workplace. Richard writes a monthly electronic devotional for businesspeople. We have led numerous conferences for leaders and other businesspeople. In 2001 we wrote the book Spiritual Leadership: Moving People on to God's Agenda, and in 2005 we authored Called to Be God's Leader: Lessons from the Life of Joshua, How God Prepares His Servants for Spiritual Leadership. We are gratified that God has used these books to inspire people to function as spiritual leaders where he has placed them. The books have led to numerous invitations for us to speak on spiritual leadership, not just in America but internationally, to business, government, military, and church leaders. This has been a humbling and challenging assignment, but we both strongly believe God is seeking to work mightily through those people in the business world who are wholly committed to him (2 Chron. 16:9).
Christian businesspeople who live in pressure cookers want their lives to affect more than their corporate shareholders. They want to hear what God says about leading their families. They want to use their business skills to strengthen their churches.
This book evolved from our experience as church and ministry leaders. Increasingly, Christian business leaders who know more than we'll ever hope to understand about politics, the economy, law, military, or medicine have sought us out on spiritual matters. These outstanding men and women want to understand how God uses people like them to impact his kingdom. They want to explore how the Holy Spirit's presence within them can affect how they lead their companies and their families.
God has systematically steered us toward the business community. We speak at leadership conferences all over North America and around the world endeavoring to help people develop into spiritual leaders. Christians, whether they are in government service, the military, or the marketplace, recognize that this is a critical time in world history. They want to hear clearly from God and to impact his kingdom. We have spent many hours helping businesspeople find God's direction for their lives.
As they shared their concerns, we observed a pattern of several reoccurring questions. So we decided to poll Christian CEOs from many of America's largest companies to discover the most pressing issues Christian businesspeople face. Their responses determined the topics addressed in this book.
The deepest concerns, as expressed by business leaders, fall into six general categories:
  • Personal life
  • Family life
  • Business life
  • Devotional life
  • Church life
  • Community and kingdom life
As you read this book, be prepared for God to speak to you. Knowing what he intends for your life will revolutionize the way you approach your business. Learning to see God's activity in your workplace will help you view the corporate office as a mission field rather than a minefield. We believe God wants to bring revival to his people, and we sense that God is strategically preparing businesspeople to be a catalyst for this to happen. It is crucial and timely that businesspeople understand their role, first and foremost, as servants of God. One's career is foundational for a greater realitythe mighty work God wants to do in and through each believer's life.
We pray this book will do much more than merely present knowledge. We hope God will use it to sensitize your heart so you can experience the amazing dimensions of his power working through your life.
