Having begun a study of the Sanskrit and Pali languages there, he moved to Oxford in 1991 where he completed his doctoral thesis on the Samadhiraja Sutra.His other publications include a translation and study of Santidevas Bodhicaryavatara (co-author Kate Crosby) and How the Nagas Were Pleased, a translation of the Buddhist drama, the Nagananda. He has taught at a number of universities, including Cardiff and McGill, and is currently a research fellow at Kings College London. He edits the journal Contemporary Buddhism. A BOUT THE A UTHOR

B ORN IN 1957 IN C ROYDON , S URREY , Andrew Skilton began to develop an interest in Buddhism for a number of years before he was ordained as a member of the Western Buddhist Order in 1979, and given the Buddhist name Sthiramati. He worked for several years in the development of a Buddhist centre in Croydon, England, before moving to Bristol and initiating the activities of the Bristol Buddhist Centre in 1980. Increasingly drawn to the study of Buddhist doctrine and history, he studied for his first degree in Theology and Religious Studies, which he was awarded in 1988, at the University of Bristol. Having begun a study of the Sanskrit and Pli languages there, he spent three years studying privately, translating and writing, before moving to Oxford in 1991 to start research for a doctoral thesis on the Samdhirja Stra. He is currently a junior research Fellow at Wolfson College, Oxford, and a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society. In collaboration with Kate Crosby, he has recently completed a translation and study of ntidevas Bodhicaryvatra, published by Oxford University Press in 1996 in their Worlds Classics series. Amongst other projects, he is currently working on a biography of the Buddha and a compilation of early Buddhist scriptures.
