Im Zuge des spatial turns der Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften hat sich die Zahl der wissenschaftlichen Forschungen in diesem Bereich deutlich erhht. Mit der Reihe RaumFragen: Stadt Region Landschaft wird Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern ein Forum angeboten, innovative Anstze der Anthropogeographie und sozialwissenschaftlichen Raumforschung zu prsentieren. Die Reihe orientiert sich an grundstzlichen Fragen des gesellschaftlichen Raumverstndnisses. Dabei ist es das Ziel, unterschiedliche Theorieanstze der anthropogeographischen und sozialwissenschaftlichen Stadt- und Regionalforschung zu integrieren. Rumliche Bezge sollen dabei insbesondere auf mikro- und mesoskaliger Ebene liegen. Die Reihe umfasst theoretische sowie theoriegeleitete empirische Arbeiten. Dazu gehren Monographien und Sammelbnde, aber auch Einfhrungen in Teilaspekte der stadt- und regionalbezogenen geographischen und sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung. In the course of the spatial turn of the social sciences and humanities, the number of scientific researches in this field has increased significantly. With the series RaumFragen: Stadt Region Landschaft scientists are offered a forum to present innovative approaches in anthropogeography and social space research. The series focuses on fundamental questions of the social understanding of space. The aim is to integrate different theoretical approaches of anthropogeographical and social-scientific urban and regional research. Spatial references should be on a micro- and mesoscale level in particular. The series comprises theoretical and theory-based empirical work. These include monographs and anthologies, but also introductions to some aspects of urban and regional geographical and social science research. In addition, conference proceedings and qualification papers (dissertations, postdoctoral theses) are also published.

Und das ungeheure Bild der Landschaft (English approximately: And the immense image of the landscape) the second verse of the poem Mchtige Landschaft (English: mighty landscape) by the German poet Christian Morgenstern (18711914) summarises in six words many aspects of the complex understanding of landscape in German: Their cultural effectiveness (countless poems have been written about landscape), their oscillation between image and object, their potential to impress, to relativise their own meaning. In this book, we would like to introduce the international public to essential aspects of the specific shaping of the relationship between society and landscape as it has developed in the German-speaking world since the Middle Ages.
Landscape is created constitutively by three components: the individual, the societal, and the physical. Without individual persons, social agreements of landscape could not be updated, without the society, the individual could not form an idea of landscape, without the physical the individual and the society lacked the stimulus to composite together objects into landscape. Since all three components are not immutable, but are subject to changes, they can be described as a threefold landscape transformation (Khne 2019c). Theoretical approaches to dealing with landscape ultimately integrate these three components in different ways and with different weighting, at times ignoring one or another. These three components are integrated not only by scientific theories, but also by non-scientific ideas of landscape, whereby there can be great cultural differences between the weighting of the individual components, but also between their connections (among many: Bruns et al. 2015; Bruns and Khne 2013; Drexler 2010; Olwig 2002).
