Worldwide Theatre
In 1986, the English director Peter Brook mounted a production in Paris of The Mahabharata, an Indian story cycle, using an acting company drawn from England, Germany, Poland, India, Italy, Upper Volta, the United States, France, Japan, Lebanon and Gabon. During the same period a Japanese film Ran, directed by Akira Kurosawa, was released worldwide; it was based on plays by Shakespeare, especially King Lear. These two examples show that, like sport, theatre has become an international activity.
Until the twentieth century, most countries developed local, regional and national traditions of theatre. Theatre history books are therefore usually divided into chapters describing developments at various times in different countries, such as Ancient Greece and the Italian Renaissance. But today it is more useful to consider together aspects of theatre from different historical and geographic areas. Instead of dividing chapters according to history and geography, this book examines different elements in the art of theatre.
Theatre Conventions
The art of theatre involves people speaking and moving, often very much as they do in ordinary life. For that reason it is not easy to define exactly which activities are theatre and which are not. In the playground, street or garden, we see children playing pretend games, sometimes dressing up to add to the fun. We may have noticed adults changing their behaviour to suit different situations (a teacher behaving differently when a more senior teacher is present, or a parent who looks and acts differently at home and at work). They are adopting roles to suit the various situations in life in which they find themselves. Sometimes whole groups dress

up and behave in a special way, at a wedding, for example, or in a court of law. Many social occasions and community activities are prepared and rehearsed like a theatrical production. This book helps you to define theatre by examining the conventions, the rules of the game, which have been used at various times and places. Each chapter considers the conventions used for one element of production. To get a clear picture of the whole art, you need to read the book right through.
What is Meant by Theatre
In general terms theatre is, on the one hand, a group of people getting together to perform a play; on the other hand, a group of people getting together to see it. The word theatre was originally used to describe a place, but it can be used to describe everything that goes on there as well. The word play comes from the verb 'to play' and means what is done in a theatre. Often people use it in a more limited sense to mean the written text of what is played. You can also use the words drama (which means the action that is done on the stage), performance or production. All these words are used in other areas of life too. For example:
theatre of war, operating theatre
to play the piano, to play football
human drama
performance
of a car, performance of a duty
food production, mass production
Sometimes words are used in ordinary life to suggest that something is like theatre (and this is not always said as a compliment). What do you think is meant when something is described as 'theatrical' or 'dramatic'? Or when they say 'It's all such a performance, such a production'? There are many other words used in the theatre and also outside it, both with a theatrical and a non-theatrical meaning. The two words in the title,
