PREFACE Bismi Allah Al Rahman Al Rahim The youngest of the three - photo 5
PREFACE
Bismi Allah Al Rahman Al Rahim
The youngest of the three monotheistic religions in the world, Islam is now in its fifteenth century of existence. Its adherentsestimated to be more than a billion people, or about one-fifth of humanityare scattered all over the globe, with major concentrations in Asia and Africa. Today, more than fifty Muslim countries are struggling to emerge from several centuries of sociopolitical and economic hibernation. They often find themselves misunderstood, stigmatized, and marginalized by the non-Islamic world, especially the technologically modern nations of the West. Muslims are finding that the Western media tend to interpret all their actions and aspirations in religious terms despite the fact that their sociopolitical and economic structures are primarily the result of imperial Westernized systems. A secular, sociopolitical context seems to be reserved for the West even though religious assumptions underlie almost every action in those countries. Although there is no separation between religion and the state in Islam, very few media and academic professionals in the West acknowledge that most modern Muslim states neither operate according to the teachings of Islam nor represent the people they govern. Moreover, few groups or individuals question the validity of secularism and the separation of religion and state in the functions of the Western "liberal" countries.
