Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche is one of my most revered teachers. . . . Not only should we admire his inconceivable knowledge, wisdom, and accomplishment, but more important, we should follow his example and emulate those qualities ourselves.

DILGO KHYENTSE RINPOCHE (19101991) was a highly accomplished meditation master, scholar, and poet and a principal holder of the Nyingma lineage. This preface is adapted fromThe Collected Works of Dilgo Khyentse.
F OR ELEVEN CONTINUOUS YEARS while I was living with Khyentse Rinpoche as a disciple and attendant, I had the privilege and daunting responsibility of orally translating many of his teachings. Over time transcripts were made available to qualified editors who worked on refining the manuscripts. Sharing these teachings through this collection gives all of us who participated in preparing them a gratifying sense of accomplishment.
When he first left Tibet as a refugee in 1959, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche lived for some time in the hill station of Kalimpong in West Bengal. Soon after his arrival, a few foreign students came to meet this extraordinary spiritual teacher and seek his guidance. Among them was John Driver (Knchog Pelgye), who was also one of the very few Westerners who met Dzongsar Khyentse Chkyi Lodr, one of Khyentse Rinpoches root teachers, who passed away in Sikkim in 1959. Others, such as Prince Peter of Greece (who was then living in Kalimpong) and a few European scholars, also met Khyentse Rinpoche in these early years. Later, Gene Smith, arguably the most knowledgeable Western Tibetologist, also became very close to him and used to host him at his residence in New Delhi. Many other dedicated Western practitioners came to consider Khyentse Rinpoche as the main source of inspiration in their lives.
