The Church and Social Reform studies the nature and extent of Patriarch Athanasios social reforms and political involvement during his two tenures on the patriarchal throne of Constantiople. The traditional influence, power, and authority that resided in the patriarchate of Constantinople made the involvement of an aggressive patriarch in the social affairs of the empire virtually inevitable.

Acknowledgments
It is with appreciation that the author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of many friends and colleagues in the preparation of this history. This is an ideal opportunity to mention the friends and family who permitted the time to put together a manuscript whose final form never represents the actual time, labor, and research that went into it. My family enabled me as well as inspired me to delve more deeply into the person of the Patriarch Athanasios and, more especially, his social reform which reform speaks so loudly to us today. My late wife, Stellie, had always been my greatest inspiration, fan, and motivator. My sister-in-law Pamela has always made by life easier and freed me to do the research and writing I love so much. My children, Dean and Niki, on the other hand, each a scholar in his/her own way, merely tolerated anything that did not occur in a test tube or appear on the evening news.
Special appreciation goes to both a friend and benefactor without whose moral and material support this manuscript would not have made it through the many dark nights that only a researcher can know. Mr. Albert Joseph and the Albert and Rosemary Joseph Foundation have been consistently encouraging of my work and conscious of the need of the Orthodox Church for more scholarly research on practical aspects of Church history. Special thanks to Albert Joseph.
