Introduction
I remember my first meditation well, more than thirty years ago in a community room on my colleges campus. The idea of meditation was entirely new and foreign to me, and I had come to the class at the suggestion of a friend to help with the chronic headaches I had been experiencing. Like many people meditating for the first time, I was shocked to discover how difficult it was to quiet my mind and follow my breath for even a few seconds. As an accomplished student and trained dancer at the time, I took pride in my self-discipline and determination. But here was something I could not simply power my way through. Nevertheless, in the few moments I was able to focus, I touched a peace and stillness I had not known existed within me.
Although I could never have imagined it at the time, that day marked a turning point in my life. In addition to helping with my headaches, which were unquestionably stress-related, that meditation class and the metaphysical questions it triggered for me initiated a deep spiritual search that has continued to this day. Meditation also provided a platform for me to explore energy sensations and intuitions I had often experienced, which led to my eventual studies in energy healing and emotional work (my current field). My appreciation for these different facets of meditation has driven me to both study and teach multiple formsmindfulness, including certification in order to guide teams in corporate environments; chakra and kundalini meditation as both a spiritual and energy healing foundation for myself and clients; Zen as a complement to martial arts studies; and practices from many different spiritual traditions as part of my spiritual explorations, including my current pathway of Tibetan Buddhism.
I am interested in both what these forms have in common and how they differ, and while I am definitely a believer in committing to a single meditation practice, I also have experienced the value of learning multiple approaches, because doing so has deepened my own understanding and growth. This, more than anything, is what has guided me to write this booka belief that the worlds spiritual, healing, and scientific traditions all have something to offer the contemporary meditator. My primary goal was to help you go deeper into the areas that most intrigue you by bringing some of this information into one book, with many other book references sprinkled throughout. The topics covered are meant to be useful to you, whether you are a long-time meditator seeking new inspiration or an occasional practitioner hoping to increase your engagement.
