Foreword
Reading this book has been a delight for me. One reason is that I myself suffered intensely as a teenager because I did not have the kind of conversion experience which Saul of Tarsus had. If only someone could have helped me to see that a "Timothy" had a devout childhood. It was easy for Timothy therefore to "cross over" from innocence to a declaration of sincere faith in Christ as Savior, and to the intention of making Christ the Lord of his life.
Marlin Jeschke has given us a thoughtful book, enriching the former treatments of Menno Simons (1539) and of Henrich Funck (1744). He makes us wince for too often glorifying the conversions of hardened sinners while not rejoicing adequately over the more gentle coming to faith of those brought up in the instruction and nurture of the Lord. The author helps us to see that in the New Testament era many of the baptisms were of adults who came to saving faith after having lived in sin for a time. Today, however, thousands of youth are baptized after a happy and largely carefree childhood of innocence. God's ideal is for this pe-

riod of innocence to be the norm, and for making the crossover to saving faiththe appropriation of the faith in which one has been rearedat the first clear call of the Spirit.
Let no one assert that the writer does not believe in conversion. He does. But he urges the church to give more attention to happy Christian homes, to being more creative in the nurture of its youth, and to making baptism services occasions for joyful celebration. The whole process is the more excellent way!
Finally, this book examines the grounds of infant baptism honestly and patiently, with no throwing of bricks at pedobaptists. Yet it thoughtfully defends both a child-dedication service and the celebration of the coming to a personal faith in and loyalty to Christ by a meaningful service of water baptism. It is this believer's baptism which is most faithful to the New Testament symbolism of water baptism. This book deserves wide reading and earnest acceptance.

Author's Preface
Most people have alternating feelings about the subject of baptism and their experience of it. Baptism is usually considered a most important practice of the church; many Christians cherish memories of their own baptism. And yet the subject of baptism seldom if ever appears in their conversation, and they have a hard time generating enthusiasm for baptismal services in their congregation.
