Lesson 1
Learning about God
Jonah Learns about God
The first men and women who lived on the earth did not know as much about God as we do today. In Old Testament times persons were learning more and more about God. When Jesus came into the world, people learned the most about God. Jesus once said, "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father" (John 14:9). Jesus himself was God. When people saw the love and purity of Jesus, they knew what God was like.
You know the story of Jonah. Jonah lived about 800 years before Jesus. In that day Jonah knew many things about God. Jonah was a prophet and told the people of Israel to obey God. One day God told Jonah to go to Nineveh, the capital of Assyria, to tell the people to repent of their sins. But the Ninevites were not Jews. So Jonah decided not to go because he thought that God did not love the Ninevites. In this Jonah was mistaken, for God loved them as much as God loved Jews.
To avoid going to Nineveh, Jonah ran in the opposite direction. He went to the seaport of Joppa and boarded a ship for faraway Tarshish. As soon as the ship put to sea, God sent a terrible storm. The sailors were frightened. They were sure that God sent the storm to punish someone on board. Finally they discovered the trouble was Jonah. He admitted his disobedience to God, and asked to be thrown into the sea. The moment he landed in the water he was swallowed by a great fish. There in the belly of the fish Jonah had time to think. He came to his senses and began to pray. At last God heard him and made the fish vomit Jonah upon the dry land.
Again God told Jonah to go to Nineveh. This time Jonah obeyed. The people of Nineveh heard his message. They believed and repented of their sins. When God saw their sorrow, God did not destroy their city. But Jonah had much more to learn about God's love. He was not glad to see the people turn to God. Read

chapter 4 of Jonah to see the difference between the attitudes of Jonah and of God toward the people of Nineveh.
Learning about God
1
God in the First Verse of the Bible. Genesis 1:1.
The Bible begins with the record of God's great work of creation. The Bible does not try to prove that there is a God, for there are evidences on every hand that God is. We do not try to prove there is a sun. We do not try to prove that there is an earth. Neither do we try to prove there is a God. The Bible is God's Word in which God tells us about himself.
