Foreword
We live in a world which often seems to have lost its way. The communities which held us together are coming unglued. Drugs and violence and injustice stalk our cities. Rich people need binoculars to see the poor people on the other side of the gap.
Followers of Jesus can find new meaning, joy, and direction, even in today's world. Among the many who follow Christ are Mennonites, who take their name from Menno Simons, a Frisian (Dutch) Reformer of the sixteenth century.
This book explores beliefs held in common by Christians of all denominations and highlights those stressed by Mennonites. As they experience the modern pressures all Christians face, not all Mennonites emphasize the same beliefs.
However, Mennonites generally see God's

forgiveness of sins and our choice to live rightly, even in the face of suffering, as inseparable.
Mennonites believe a key way to live rightly is to reject war and violence and model the way of peace.
Mennonites believe that the courageous living Jesus asks of his followers requires Christians to band together in community. This is how they receive the strength they need to model for the world a different way of life. A troubled planet needs such emphases.
Until the nineteenth century, most Mennonites were found in Europe and North America. During the twentieth century, however, missions, relief and service activities, and the grace of God have resulted in a worldwide Mennonite fellowship.
