If youve ever made a goal or resolution and not kept it, this is for you.
If youve ever said, When things get back to normal, then Ill... , this is for you.
If youve ever felt too tired to do what you know you really need to do, this is for you.
True change really is possible.
And it can start here and now.
Our culture tells us that we have to Go big or go home. But research on change reveals a very different story: its the small things that make the greatest difference over time. And with God as our partner in the process, thats amplified even more.
This is your moment. Are you ready to simply do what you can for the next twenty-one days? No matter what youve already tried or been through, theres a yes still being spoken somewhere deep inside you.
So lets get going on the steps that will lead to a better, brighter future for you.
1
Start Small
Sow your seed in the morning,
and at evening let your hands not be idle,
for you do not know which will succeed,
whether this or that,
or whether both will do equally well.
Ecclesiastes 11:6
Big impact.
Significant results.
Maximum volume.
The phrases leap out at me from one commercial after another as I sigh and shake my head. I realize these are just advertising ploys. Yet I often translate the same attitude to my everyday life. I set lofty goals. I want to achieve great things. I want to do it all or none at all.
Have you ever felt the same way?
It seems Gods perspective is far different. Even the amount of faith we need is described as a mustard seed, which is tiny. If you hold one in the palm of your hand, its barely a speck. Its not the size of our faith but instead the One were placing it in that matters. He enables us to do all things. Perhaps its time to shrink the change you have in mind down to a more manageable size.
Think about what you want. Pray about it. Talk to your trusted friends. Decide on the minimum youd like to accomplish in a particular area of your life over the next twenty-one days. Then divide that by about half. Yep, you heard me.
I want you to aim lower. Take it down a notch. Make your goal less lofty.
If youre feeling a twinge of panic, thats a good sign. Because although it may feel uncomfortable to think this way, heres the reality: a small goal that actually happens and can grow is better than the grandest one that remains a fantasy.
Dont worrywere not throwing out the big dreams you have. In fact, this process is going to make them more likely to become reality. Well get to that later.
But right now? One small goal. Thats what were starting with, my friend.
And just twenty-one days because research has shown thats how long it takes to make a new habit.
We serve a great God who can grow what we begin into more than we can imagine. But before he can do so, we have to make the first move and start the process. He gave us the ability to take action because he wants us to freely move forward rather than him forcing our steps. He will wait patiently until we choose to begin. Dont let unrealistic expectations or idealistic ambitions hold you back any longer.
God can handle the big. When you start out, its okay for your part to simply be the small.
Find a journal or other place you can write your reflections throughout this twenty-one-day journey. Today, reflect on your goal and write it down in one sentence or simply a few words: My mustard seed goal is...

Be Specific
In their hearts humans plan their course,
but the L ORD establishes their steps.
Proverbs 16:9
I want to be happier.
Id like my marriage to get better.
I hope I can lose some weight.
Weve all said words like those above at some point. Doing so is a bit like lying on our backs, looking at the clouds, and pointing out vague shapes we think we see above us. Our goals shift with every wind, and we have trouble knowing whether or not our efforts have been successful.
I have a confession: I dont like specific goals. Im a big-picture, dreamer kind of girl, and I want to keep my options open. A specific goal can feel a lot like a too-tight turtleneck in winter. For crying out loud , I think, just let me breathe a little here.
I also get concerned that setting specific goals will get in the way of the Holy Spirit in my life. I want to be led by God, not driven by goals Ive set up on my own.
But it turns out that goals can be helpful tools along the way and can actually serve as reminders of the bigger missions God has called us to pursue in life. Whats necessary is realizing that goals arent ultimatums; they are simply directions. We are in charge of themtheyre not in charge of us. Goals can be changed, adjusted, or dismissed any time wed like or as soon as God shows us that its time for a switch.
Goals arent just about a destination. Instead they are more about focus. Goals serve to keep something in particular in front of us. In the middle of all the different distractions in our lives, goals set aside certain things and essentially label them Important: Pay Attention to This.
Pursuing a goal gets us moving, but its still God who determines our ultimate destination, as the verse above says. Its hard to redirect someone who is standing still. So use goals to give you motivation as well as directionthen let God guide you as you go.
Research has shown that the more specific a goal is, the more likely it will actually be accomplished. Its powerful to pinpoint a goal and write it down. Our brains are wired to notice when we do so. I like to think thats part of being made in the image of the God who said, Let there be light, and there was (Gen. 1:3). Putting words to the desires of your heart is a uniquely human capability thats more powerful than we often realize. Instead of gazing at the clouds and hoping, we get on our feet and start moving toward all God has for usand he promises to help us along the way.
Today revisit your mustard seed goal and make sure its as specific as possible. The quickest check is asking yourself: How will I know when I have completed this goal? Write your answer in your journal.
