FOREWORD
Several valued books have been written on the subject, How We Got Our Bible. A considerable portion of one of the chapters of this book is devoted to the same theme. Finding that subject interesting, we were encouraged in the thought that possibly some of our readers would be interested in a recital of how we got the book which you now hold in your hand.
At a number of meetings of the Mennonite General Conference the need of another book of Bible Doctrines was emphasized, and resolutions favoring the writing, compilation, and publication of such a treatise were adopted. At first the idea was simply to revise the book on Bible Doctrine, formerly published by order of General Conference, but the plan of an entirely new book finally prevailed, and the present volume is the result.
At the meeting of the Mennonite General Conference held at Eureka, Ill., in August, 1925, the Executive Committee of the Mennonite Publication Board, working in co-operation with the Executive Committee of Mennonite General Conference, was authorized to proceed without further delay in the matter of securing writers and preparing the book on Bible Doctrines. The undersigned was selected to shoulder the principal share of the burden in preparing the work, and twenty-one other brethren, nearly all members of the above-named committees together with the Mennonite Publishing Committee and editors in the Mennonite Publishing House, assisted in a very material way in bringing this work to completion. The manuscripts were twice passed around to the different members of this combined committeeonce in the formative stage and once after the work was practically complete. Following are the names of those who served in this capacity: D. H. Bender, J. K. Bixler, Oscar Burkholder, J. C. Frey, L. J.

Stauffer, A. D. Wenger, C. F. Yake, and A. I. Yoder. Special acknowledgements are due to D. H. Bender, who furnished the introductory chapter as well as the chapters on The Ministry and The Congregation; to J. A. Ressler, Aaron Loucks, John L. Horst, and Ernest G. Gehman, whose careful reading and constructive criticisms of the completed manuscripts did much to enrich the thoughts found in the book and to give the volume its final form and finish; and to a number of other brethren whose names are not found in the above list but whose advice and counsel are much appreciated.
In the preparation of this volume we leaned heavily upon and copied copiously from our former work of a similar nature, Bible Doctrine. Chief among other works consulted, besides concordances and cyclopedias, were Evans' Great Doctrines of the Bible, and Torrey's What the Bible Teaches. Other books of a similar nature were also consulted.
To God be the glory for His sustaining grace while this work was in the course of preparation. In all that we endeavored to say and teach we took it as a matter of course that a plain thus saith the Lord is the final word on any subject under consideration. We have tried to cover the entire range of Scripture, though limited space compelled us to be brief on many points that we would like to have considered at greater length, and the reader will no doubt find many other points that might have been very materially improved and strengthened. While the entire message is intended as an exposition of Christian doctrine, our aim was to reach the heart as well as the head, to appeal to the conscience as well as the understanding, to make the message practical as well as exegetical. How well we succeeded, or failed, we will let the reader judge.
