Acknowledgments
A single author certainly does not mean the absence of collaborators. Perhaps this is even more the case with a book that seeks to find meaning and significance in the words and rhetoric of a special body of public servantsthe men and women who have served as justices on the nation's highest court. From its beginnings these very special judges not only decided cases but in the process of explaining their decisions shaped our culture as well. Many of the words that follow are their words, and athough they hardly can be held responsible for the purposes to which their phrases have been put, the author is indebted to them for their contribution.
