The Channel Islands, situated between France and England, have always been exposed to the influences of both countries, and have resolved these potentially conflicting pressures in unique and interesting ways. Dr Ogiers study of events in Guernsey between 1540 and 1640 explores changes which took place on the island as Catholicism was replaced by Calvinism, imposed by a series of commissions appointed by the English government during the reign of Elizabeth. The changes in society which resulted are carefully charted, showing how, as the old Catholic forms of social organisation were replaced by the disciplinarian approach of the Calivinist regime Protestant pastoral care replacing the former Catholic fraternities the islands old elite contrived to retain control, to their own financial advantage but at the cost of the loss of the Calvinist dream and the development of an increasingly divided island society. Dr D.M. OGIERgained his Ph.D. at the University of Warwick.

PREFACE AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This book closely follows the text of my doctoral thesis "Reformation and Society in Guernsey c.1500c.1640" presented to the University of Warwick in 1993. It therefore has some of the peculiarities of the thesis form, and - I hope - some of its advantages.
In the course of research and writing I incurred many debts. First, I am pleased to thank Professor Bernard Capp, who was the kindest of supervisors, and his own work no small inspiration. I am also most grateful for the encouragement to publication given by my examiners Dr Marie Axton and Professor Jack Scarisbrick. The History Department at Warwick was a very hospitable and stimulating place to study for all of my six years there.
Back in Guernsey, Hugh Lenfestey, the Island Archivist, read the whole text and made valuable suggestions, some of which are acknowledged in the notes. I am also pleased to acknowledge help from his colleagues Bill Gallienne and Anthony Tucker. At Guernsey's record office, the Greffe, Her Majesty's Greffier Ken Tough has allowed me access to all relevant records and taken a kindly interest in my work, as has Deputy Greffier Sam Clapp. At the Priaulx Library, Guernsey, Dr Harry Tomlinson and his colleagues have been most helpful, and Dr Tomlinson has repeatedly and unhesitatingly placed his profound knowledge of French and Guernsey French
