Foreword
Foreword by light and sound session designer and inventor of AV3X, Christopher Oliver
When Michael Landgraf first published "Mind States An Introduction to Light & Sound Technology" in January of 1998 the world of brainwave entrainment technology was a very different place. In the fourteen years since then the mind machine world has changed dramatically. This new edition tracks these changes and brings Mind States up to date. As 2012 draws to a close light and sound mind machines are about to break into the mainstream through a national advertising campaign built around a couple of well known celebrities. I will not name any names, but by the time you are reading this you will most likely already know to whom I am referring.
Seismic shifts have taken place in the light and sound machine and brainwave technology landscape that made this revised edition necessary. Massive changes to the available technology and public awareness have taken place including the introduction of light and sound brainwave entrainment via video and DVD, known as Digital Meditation Technology, the development of integrated light/sound and CES devices like the DAVID Delight Pro, the introduction of the pROSHI Neurodynamic Activator disentrainment meditation device, the proliferation of binaural beats in the mainstream and the use of brainwave entrainment technology for sports focus training, notably with Olympic athletes just to name a few.
Throughout all of these changes Michael Landgraf has stood at the forefront of the light and sound world as a respected voice in the industry. From his AVS Journal magazine, the first magazine dedicated to light and sound technology to his online presence on Mindmachines.com and social media, Mr. Landgraf has served as a source of current information about light and sound mind machines and brainwave technology for over 22 years. He has sponsored relaxation programs and introduced light and sound mind machines to police departments, military agencies, sports teams, hospitals, public schools, the Braille institute, psychologists and so many others. His contributions to the light and sound machine industry include the introduction of RGB multicolor lightframes, lightframe polarity adapters and the co-development of the dual independent binaural beat generator. Everyone of any consequence in the light and sound machine industry knows and respects him and has worked with him in some capacity at some point in time.
I first met Michael Landgraf in 1992 when I was in need of replacement eyeframes for my Innerquest 9110 light and sound machine. After contacting the manufacturer I was referred to Landgraf Enterprises LLC and was very surprised to find his office was less than a block away from my house. This first interaction was the start of a lifelong friendship and my introduction to working in the industry. It is safe to say that I would never have become a professional session designer writing the sessions for some of the best selling light and sound machines or developed AV3X had I never met Michael Landgraf.
Michael currently lives with his wife, Carol, in Granada Hills, California and continues his tireless evangelism of light and sound technology.
Introduction
INTRODUCTION
I purchased my first light and sound unit in 1985. Five years later, light and sound became my profession. It has been an incredible journey. You are about to learn what I have seen.
Having graduated from college as a cultural anthropologist, my main interest has always been one of participant-observation. Getting involved, then stepping back and watching what happens. This is how I approached light and sound, why I have volunteered hundreds of hours and donated dozens of instruments. I have sponsored programs that have benefited teachers and students, doctors and patients, businesses and athletes. Everyday people.
Mind States is a little book that is in it's second update (November, 2012) since the original publication in 1997. It will show you how to use a light and sound instrument. Very simple and very basic. It will tell you all you need to get started and where to go to learn more.
I am a light and sound dealer who works with professionals that did not use light and sound instrumentation until we met. It has been very enjoyable introducing professionals to a new technology. Watching skepticism turn into excitement. Seeing new applications net positive
results. What we have observed has sometimes been completely different to what many of the leaders in this field have led us to believe will occur. It is not my intention to upset anyone, certainly not the leaders behind light and sound technology, but facts are facts. You, the user of light and sound equipment, deserve to know these facts.
Why these differences have occurred is very simple. No two people think exactly alike. The mental, emotional and physical sensations that one individual experiences from a light and sound session will be similar, but not the same as the next individual. After all, how can we expect the response to light and sound from an individual who is terminally ill to be the same as, for example, those experienced by an emotionally upset police officer?
In the first section you will learn what a light and sound (and sound only) instrument is. You will also learn the general characteristics of each brainwave state and how, by utilizing light and sound frequency stimulation, these different brainwave states can be accessed. Also, you will gain an understanding of how frequencies and brainwaves are associated and whether or not this technology is safe for you to use.
I began sponsoring learning/relaxation programs in 1991. Working with professionals in the medical, educational, business and law enforcement communities, we utilized light and sound frequencies in an effort to determine their impact upon targeted brainwave states. How did we use light and sound? Were the sessions we used effective? Did these sessions elicit positive results? In the second section, I will share the answers with you. How professionals use light and sound stimulation to access beta, alpha, theta and delta brainwave states can be your guide as you begin your journey towards consciousness exploration and personal relaxation.
How do you choose a light and sound (or sound only) instrument? What type of system would best suit your needs? Section three will help you in answering these questions. Is the system easy to use? Durable? What about lightframes and headphones? What types of light and sound generation are these instruments capable of producing? And how does tactile (physical vibrations) stimulation effect a light and sound experience? These are very important questions you need to answer when you purchase a light and sound system. This section will help you make the right decision.
The next section will show you how simple it is to use light and sound (and sound only) instruments and why you have no reason to be overwhelmed by this technology. Quick starting your unit, along with helpful hints, will enable you to begin your light and sound experience immediately. You will see what adding music or spoken word can do. You will learn what built-in and downloadable sessions are and how, if these sessions do not meet a specific need, you can design your own light and sound session to meet that need.
