In 1983, during the commemoration of the five hundredth anniversary of Martin Luther's birth and the centennial observation of Karl Marx's death, I began my archival research on the Vermittlungstheologie in the (then) German Democratic Republic. In the no less auspicious year of 1990, as East and West Germany reunited, I concluded that research.
