GENERAL EDITOR'S PREFACE
Generally speaking, comparative religion has been, from a Western viewpoint, the study of "other" religions, that is, non-Christian traditions. It is rare to find course offerings on Christianity in North America that go beyond historical, literary (e.g., New Testament), doctrinal-theological, and, increasingly, feminist approaches. Social scientific treatments of such things as Christian communities and leadership roles are available, but they tend to be narrow in scope.
Charismatic Christianity as a Global Culture is a rarity in the literature about the tradition. By treating what many would consider marginal, idiosyncratic, and even odd varieties of Christian experience and witnessing as a mainstream dimension extending back to Pentecost, the book informs, surprises, and delights. The emphasis throughout is on charismatic Christianity as both global and, from the standpoint of personal piety, normative. The editor and her colleagues present various aspects of their subject, sometimes in frank disagreement with each other. But throughout there is a concern for presenting data in a manner that transcends "dry academic discourse." There is a sense of strong engagement in most of the book that is a far cry from the usual "Enlightenment Rationalist Fundamentalism" (Ernest Gellner) of detachment and condescension of non-believers studying believers.
