Preface
No doubt an Imam will risean Imam who will govern according to the name of God and the blessings.
For more than a millenium the idea of the future coming of the Mahdi has provided Shi'i piety with a unique aspiration in the redemption through the appearance of the twelfth Imam. Modern western scholars have written virtually nothing on the subject of the Mahdi idea in Imamite Shi'ism, and this became a motive behind the present work which grew out of a doctoral dissertation submitted to the University of Toronto in 1976. I felt it necessary to examine the vast literature on this subject and make my findings available for other scholars without losing sight of the rigorous demands of modern scholarship. The extent to which I have been able to achieve this purpose was due in large measure to the assistance I have received from my professors and from many friends and colleagues in Toronto, Mashhad in Iran and Najaf in Iraq.
I wish to express my deepest appreciation and gratitude to Professors G.M. Wickens and R.M. Savory who kindly read revised and expanded versions of my work and offered many valuable suggestions and incisive critical comments that guided my research. I also wish to thank Professor M.E. Marmura who kindly agreed to comment on the chapter on Shi'ite theology. I am also grateful to Professors Wilfrid Madelung, W.M. Watt and Muhsin Mahdi for having read the work and made some substantial comments pertaining to the theological problems discussed therein.

I am also indebted to Sayyid Fadil al-Malani of Mashhad and Sayyid Muhammad Baqir al-Khirsan of Najaf who were particularly helpful on problems of kalam, while Professor Wa'izzada Khurasani helped with many obscurely worded hadith reports. I would also like to acknowledge the help of various professors at the Faculty of Theology and Islamic Studies at the University of Mashhad with whom I had many useful discussions related to this book. In Charlottesville, my colleagues at the Department of Religious Studies, Professors Victor W. Turner and Kyle P. McCarter read the entire work and made numerous and pertinent suggestions for improving it. In preparing this study for publication, I received much encouragement from William D. Eastman, director of the State University of New York Press.
