Introduction
What we are noticing in the West, especially in theology, is the breakdown of Western Christendom's cultural dominance. This can be a breakthrough to a new era of exciting theologizing that frees us in the West from certain outmoded cultural forms that hold back persons from encountering the "living God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob." Static forms have stood too long in the way of true theology as a medium, a science to bring people into an experience of the transcendent-immanent God.
Karl Jaspers in his work, The Origin and Goal of History, speaks of the great transitions in the history of humanity: 1. the axial transition of the "first millenium" when genuine personal consciousness as we know it today emerged; 2. our present rationalistic and technological age, which both threatens the destruction of the axial breakthrough by restricting human consciousness to only one of its capacities and simultaneously promises a heightened

awareness of human personhood; 3. the future planetization of humanity, which both promises a further expansion of human consciousness beyond cultural boundaries and demands it, for as the world becomes increasingly one, what happens now becomes absolutely decisive.1
