A Note on Orthography
A study of Inca culture, though written in English, must contain words in Spanish, the dominant language of modern Peru, and Quechua, the language of the Inca Empire and the first language of many natives of the Peruvian highlands. My choice of orthography for borrowed words in the text deserves some explanation.
Where it has been necessary to use a Spanish or Quechua word, I have done so. Where a Quechua word has been adopted into Peruvian Spanish, I have used the modern spelling. Thus the reader will see huaca instead of wak'a and ceque rather than zeq'e. Where an Inca word is not used in modern Spanish, the Quechua spelling is given. I have used the Spanish renderings of Inca personal names and the names of royal families. The Spanish spelling is used for place names or names of archaeological sites when that is the version most commonly found on Peruvian maps or in the scholarly literature. In cases where the official form of a name is in Quechua or where I elicited a place name in that language, I have used the native name. Although this solution has led to some apparent inconsistencies (the reader will see Tambo Machay and Vilcashuaman[Vilcashuamn] rendered in Spanish orthography, but Mawk'allaqta and Huch'uy Qozqo in Quechua spelling), it seemed to be the best solution to allow the reader to identify sites discussed by others while reducing the number of variant spellings presented in the literature.
