PREFACE
This book began as a symposium at the Society for American Archaeology meetings held in Toronto in 1987. The focus of that symposium was to evaluate how accurate the ethnohistorical documents are concerning the nature of Inca control in provincial areas, using archaeological data as an independent means of verification. Each of the original participants, most of whom have contributed to this volume, was an archaeologist who had worked in a particular part of the Andes and had a regional perspective to bring to this question.
What came out of the symposium was the consensus that there was more variability in the nature of Inca control than was generally believed. There was sufficient enthusiasm about publishing the results that I agreed to act as editor. Catherine Julien's essay was the only one solicited that was not part of the original symposium, and hers was included to provide a larger framework for interpretation. In what I feel is a typical gesture of collegiality for Andeanists, each of the authors agreed to allow her to use his or her essay for this purpose.
The result of this collaboration has been well worth the effort of bringing the book together. Not only has a significant amount of original data concerning the Incas been brought together in a single volume, but a much larger vision of the Inca empire has been achieved, a vision that begins to address some of the larger questions about Inca control that have developed in recent years: How accurate are the ethnohistorical accounts of the Inca empire? How variable was Inca control in the provinces they conquered? What actual effects did this conquest have on indigenous people? How did existing sociopolitical factors influence the nature of the Incas' presence in the provinces?
The effort of bringing this volume to fruition involved various kinds of decisions and compromises regarding orthography. Both Spanish and Quechua terms are common in any study of the Incas, and it is necessary to explain the rationale for the spellings presented. I have used the hispanicized versions of most Quechua terms because they are more generally recognized by lay readers. The notable exceptions to this rule are the terms
