PREFACE
I chose the title "The Goddesses' Mirror" (suggested by my wife) because it conveys my attempt to reflect accurately a variety of female images of the divine. Then, too, the word mirror is derived from the Latin mirari, meaning "to wonder at." I hope that readers of this book will feel some of the wonder that I have felt in seeking to understand and appreciate these ten visions of the divine feminine.
The chapters on Durga*, Laksmi*, and Sita* are slightly revised versions of material that appeared in my book Hindu Goddesses 1985 The Regents of the University of California.

INTRODUCTION
Some years ago, when the USSR first began its manned space program, a story was popular that featured a Tass reporter's interview of the first cosmonaut upon his return to earth. With a glint of mischief in his eye and pencil poised, the reporter asked the first human space voyager: "Well, comrade, did you see God up there?" Imagine the suprise of the godless Marxist reporter when his fellow comrade replied: "Yes, I did see God up there!" Briefly left speechless, the reporter recovered his professional instincts to ask: ''Well, comrade, tell us then, what did God look like?" The cosmonaut replied: "She is black!"
The humor of this story is based on people's presuppositions in Western culture about the sex and color of the divine, which are assumed to be male and white. To a great extent, these presuppositions have been inherited, and are still maintained, by the three great sister religions of the West: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Commenting on the sexist tendencies of Christian theology, Rosemary Ruether says: "Starting with the basic assumption that the male is the normative human person and therefore also the normarive image of God, all symbols, from God-language and christology to church and ministry, are shaped by the pervasive pattern of the male as center, the female as subordinate and auxiliary."1
