Hazelden, a spiritual odyssey: summary, description and annotation

This is the definitive history of Hazelden, a pioneer in the treatment of alcoholism and addiction since 1949. The fact-and-photo-filled narrative describes early treatment at Hazelden, how the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous were woven in, and the development of the multi-disciplinary approach known as the Minnesota Model. But, just as importantly, this is a book about people. People who dedicated themselves to restoring the self-worth, dignity, and the humanity of each and every individual seeking their help. This is the real story of Hazelden, reflected in the spiritual odyssey of every individual who ever passed through its doors. Author Damian McElrath held a number of administration positions at Hazelden for over ten years. Most notably, he was Director of Hazeldens Minnesota residential programs in Center City, Plymouth, and St. Paul.

Preface
When I arrived at Hazelden in 1977 as a Clinical Pastoral Education trainee, I was struck by the power that Hazelden had for radically changing the course of people's lives. Indeed, my personal spiritual journey had come to a halt without my being aware of it, and my association with Hazelden has allowed me to rediscover and re-create my own spiritual odyssey. My perspective of Hazelden over the past decade permits me to view the institution, its people, and its accomplishments as a nineteenth century writer might have called "an unfolding." I see the history of Hazelden as a continuing journey, historical in design and structure, but spiritual in its purpose and accomplishments. I view Hazelden's unfolding as a journey still unfinished. I hope the following pages will justify my title calling Hazelden itself a spiritual odyssey, and that its history is simply a testimony to that.
The written history of Hazelden has been attempted many times before this. Previous writers who had been assigned to or who were volunteers for the task found it unmanageable, surrendered, and turned it over to a future author. There were good reasons why the early attempts did not meet with success. One reason was that clear guidelines as to what type of history or publication Hazelden sought had never been established. Perhaps this was a prudent omission, with management simply trusting a process beyond its control or understanding.
There had been suggestions for a pamphlet for alumni and departing patients; or perhaps a trade book for the public, presenting the entire history of alcoholism treatment in Minnesota and the intimate role Hazelden had played in it. Other suggestions included publishing a pamphlet which would praise and promote the type of health care Hazelden provided; or finally, a

direct and honest account, no holds barred a realistic picture which would present a lively, accurate, readable, and saleable publication.
