Dear Chris is a fictional correspondence between a college professor, nicknamed Dr. Mac, and a former student, Chris. Dr. Mac tackles real life theological and ethical questions that emerge from Chriss family life and his work as a newspaper reporter, questions that are typical of the concerns of many Christians today. Topics such as the death of a child, infertility, the character of God, the uniqueness of Jesus, and the choice of a career are treated from the context of Christian theology. McWilliams, a college professor for more than 20 years, provides an overview of systematic Christian theology in a personable, readable format. The narrative flows smoothly from and between complex issues in much the same way these issues confront us day to day.

Preface
By writing this book I am inviting you to do something most of us consider immoral and illegal, reading another person's mail. The correspondence between Chris and Dr. Mac, however, is fiction, and you are encouraged to read their exchange of letters. I hope that these letters are "true" in the sense of being authentic statements about the Christian life even though they are in a fictional form. They deal with several significant theological and ethical truths related to the Christian life.
Someone once described the apostle Paul's letters as theology in street clothes.1 I hope that delightful word picture accurately fits the letters presented here as well. This correspondence is designed to help Christians understand some of the basic convictions of their faith more clearly. Like many of the New Testament letters, these reflect real life situations and concerns. Many of the fine points of academic theology are ignored in order that the relevance of the Christian faith for ordinary life might be obvious to the reader. These letters are not intended to be the final word on any subject. Rather, I trust that reading them might

prompt some serious reflection on the life of faith. Many of the topics of systematic theology appear in these pages, but I hope that the letter form will help the reader engage these issues in a non-threatening, practical manner.
Although many of my students call me "Dr. Mac," these letters are fiction. Chris is a composite of several of my former students. The questions he raises in our correspondence are typical of the types of questions I am often asked inside and outside of my classrooms. The letters from Dr. Mac in this book generally reflect my thinking on the issues discussed, but occasionally, for the sake of developing the overall story line, I have worded my letters differently than I would in "real life."
I dedicate this book to my students. They consistently challenge and encourage me. Much like Chris, I once struggled with the proper form for my ministry, but over the years my students' response to my teaching has confirmed for me that teaching is the type of ministry for which God prepared me. C. S. Lewis was once described as an ordinary Christian trying to think clearly.2 I hope the same might be true of me and my students. Together we engage in the study of theology, aptly termed by many Christians "faith seeking understanding."3
