Preface
This book makes available to general readers and English-speaking students of European history the essential writings of one of the most difficult and controversialyet one of the most creative and originalthinkers of early sixteenth-century Germany. Thomas Mntzer (born before 1491-1525) was a key figure of the early Reformation in Germany. He was one of Martin Luther's first and most insightful critics from within the ranks of the evangelical reformers; he is widely regarded as among the most important founders of a distinctive "Radical Reformation"; and he was an influential leader of the great German Peasants' War that shook the political and social structure of the Holy Roman Empire. His writings permit us, for perhaps the first time in European history, to know intimately and in detail the mind of a religious revolutionary.
