Preface
What to expect from the book?
This book is written to assist you in the pursuit of understanding the nature of your mind and its tendencies. The knowledge and practical techniques in this book intend to create a dynamic armor of positivity during fragile moments in life and to deal rightly with opinions and judgements.
The first half of the book interprets the human mind in the simplest manner possible, by making you more familiar with your own mind. No matter what your personality type is, you can derive insight from the lucid exploration of essential psychological themes which surprisingly are not taught to us by our education system.
By the completion of the first half, you will have a clearer understanding of topics such as: how our mind works, how our thoughts and emotions control our lives by making us take irrational decisions, etc. The second half of the book consists of some interesting concepts like negative bias, law of attraction and practical ways to solve problems or assist you in coming out of hardship.
All these practical methods are either successfully tested by myself and my audience or are time tested powerful psychological principles. All the techniques herewith can only be comprehended through the thorough understanding of the theories, which are being discussed along with the techniques. None of the theories/techniques discussed in this book are impractical or esoteric, rather all of them can be practiced with absolute ease.
Hope you will enjoy reading the book and it will benefit you immensely in your everyday life.
Chapter 1 - The Concept of Mind
I n childhood, I would often surmise that our mind is a place outside our body, a dark room full of myriad secrets and as my imagination grew more vivid, I perceived it to be a dark cave from where all thoughts originated. As I grew older, my perception about the mind changed. It occurred to me that it may well be a part of the body. This idea developed further when I started learning about the human brain - I then considered the mind and brain to be one and the same. I contemplated on this for a substantial period in my adolescence. However, delving deeper into this phenomenon, I realized that it was futile to search for the physicality of its existence and my focus shifted towards understanding the minds intrinsic nature. As I continued to inquire, I felt deeply interested in its functioning. I began to study the mammoth historical works of numerous psychologists and philosophers who expressed their perspectives regarding how our mind functions. I came to understand that irrespective of how we perceive our mind to be, it continues to affect our life impartially. We dont need to be a spiritual guru to understand the basic nature of our mind; we dont need any book either. A question naturally arises Why then do I read this book? The answer is quite straightforward - We are all caught up in the various pursuits and demands of modern life and seldom have any time to think over these matters. This book aims at making life easier by leading you through the obscure roads of understanding and reason in order to realize the very root of our actions and emotions. If used mindfully, this book shall become a guiding light when you stumble upon any predicament on the winding path of this human life.
Choosing the right tools
We, as contemporary human beings, need a quick fix for everything and it is fairly reasonable too, since there is such a great deal to experience and explore in life. However, how can one fix something when one doesnt even know how it works? For instance, consider a television set in your house which suddenly ceases to function properly and you want to watch a football match which is about to commence in sometime. Since you dont know how to repair a television, would you try to fix it yourself or call a technician instead? Of course, as you want the television to be fixed promptly, you would inevitably go with the latter option; to call the respective technician who knows how it works and thus can fix it easily. In the same way, we cant fix our mind (which is a far more sophisticated instrument than a television set), if we are not aware of its mechanism. Therefore, it's immensely important to have at least a basic idea of how our mind functions.
We can change something or use something to our advantage only when we understand its scope of application. For instance, if we want to cut a mango, which tool are we likely to use - an axe, a knife or a blade? Each of these tools are meant for cutting but are all these tools practical when it comes to cutting a mango? Most of us would say No. It is only the knife which makes the act of cutting a mango convenient and efficient. Here, the mango is a metaphor for our mind and the knife is symbolic to the methods which we use to bring the mind under control or to have a better understanding of it. We have to choose the tools scrupulously for our mind or else, it can backfire in no time. We shall explore the following idea deeply in the coming chapters - How to choose the right gear in order to tweak your thinking and transform your mind .
You will be surprised to find tools or methods which are unique to yourself and it is only you who can discover them. In case of the mango, what was it that helped us in choosing the right tool? It was its size, shape, softness and internal structure. Once we learn about the diverse aspects of our mind, we would be liberated from the pain of choice and we would immaculately know which tool is appropriate for our unique mind and necessary for our perpetual well-being.
At the outset, let me present to you a broader perspective about the mind's nature. The mind is neither a devil nor an angel. It is completely bereft of preference like a fact, which is neither positive nor negative. It has no personal bias and doesnt have any vengeance against you. You can choose whatever you want to do with this impartial device. You can use it to create destructive weapons or the most beautiful sculptures in the world. The mind is always ready to serve us unconditionally; the only thing needed is the expertise to manoeuvre it.
