About the Author

Daniel W. Doerksen holds an appointment as Honorary Research Professor from the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, Canada, where he taught from 1968 to 1997, but he now resides in Burnaby, British Columbia. Doerksen graduated from what is now the University of Winnipeg, then achieved an M.A and Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he was aided by Woodrow Wilson and Canada Council Fellowships. He is a long-term member of the Milton and John Donne societies, and has served as an associate editor of English Studies in Canada and book review editor of Renaissance and Reformation. Although early modern literature, especially poetry, is his specialty, he also developed an interest in English church history because of courses on Puritanism at the University of Chicago, where he became aware of some of Calvins previously unnoticed literary influences in England. He is the author of Conforming to the Word: Herbert, Donne, and the English Church before Laud (1997) and co-editor with Christopher Hodgkins of Centered on the Word: Literature, Scripture, and the Tudor-Stuart Middle Way (2004). He has published articles on Spenser, Donne, Herbert, and Milton, most of them related to the effects of the Church of England of that time on some the greatest English writers.
