A Teachers Influence
My Teacher of Many Years Ago
My teacher of many years ago influences me today.
The things that he instilled in me have never gone away.
In fact, they are a part of every fiber of my being,
The blood that courses through me and the eyes through which Im seeing,
The love that I am giving; the decisions that Im making,
The things that Ive accomplished and the ones Im undertaking.
For once someone influences you, he lives inside your heart,
And so of all I am today, my teacher is a part.
Realize That You Will Affect Lives
A childs life is like a piece of paper on which every passerby leaves a mark.
Chinese Proverb
As teachers as everyday, normal, run-of-the-mill individuals we often tend to underestimate the fact that we truly do affect the lives of every student we teach. Your influence can be very powerful hopefully in a positive sense yet it can also be very harmful if you do not treat this power with the utmost reverence and respect. You see, it is often easy to say things out of frustration things we may think nothing of, but that students will internalize and take to heart.
A teacher shared an experience with me. Im an accomplished musician. I teach at the university level; I perform, and I have been quite successful in my career. Isnt it sad that I cannot even balance a checkbook? And its all because of my fifth-grade teacher. What do you mean? I asked. Well, she said, I remember it like it was yesterday. I was standing at the board, struggling to work through a math problem. The teacher was so frustrated with me, and she let the whole class know it. She told me I would never be any good at math. Guess what! I never was. It affected me so intensely that I developed a mental block when it came to math, and Ive struggled with it all my life.
Ironically, she recently received a letter from one of her former music students who said, How often we underestimate the power of words. I will never forget the five words you spoke to me which have stayed with me all my life. The words were, Im so proud of you. So from one individuals story comes a perfect example of both the positive and the negative power of a teachers influence. Never underestimate just how influential you really are. And know that your students will eventually leave you, but the memory of you (and your influence positive or negative) will never leave them.
