Preface:
God's Plot Revisited
For the Reverend Thomas Shepard and his congregation in Cambridge, in the colony of Massachusetts Bay, God's plot was the great plan of human salvation. Framed in scripture and developed in Christian theology, the plot centered in the sacrifice of Christ. Extended to humanity, it embraced all who accepted it as true and committed themselves to its terms. Shepard and his people envisioned a divine scenario governing the living of their lives and the saving of their souls. They became actors with parts to play in a cosmic drama of redemption. God wrote the script, cast the parts, directed the staging; Christ took the starring role; religion explained each act and scene. The emotions and ideas invested in this plot, the meanings made of it, the ways it was livedthese were constituent and dynamic elements of Puritan spirituality.
The documents in this volume illustrate the Puritans' sense of the plot's design. The first textShepard's autobiographywas left in manuscript by the Cambridge minister at his death in 1649; it is reprinted here in full from the first edition of this book (1972). The second comprises selections from Shepard's journal. The third section presents thirty-three confessions of the men and women of Shepard's congregation from the earliest years of its existence. In these records of the pastor and his people you will find the heart of Puritan passion and the secret of Puritan power.
A note on the historiography will help put the documents in perspective. Contemporary interest in American Puritan spirituality dates from Perry Miller's master study of the New England "mind," more than a half-century old and still rewardingly read today.1 Miller's vision long ruled, but by 1972, when the first edition of God'sPlot was published, his authority was being contested. Younger scholars were raising revisionist questions. Some charged that Miller neglected the social life of early New Englanders. Others objected that he slighted the New England Puritans' inward experience. New inquiries were being projected amidst declarations
