I NTRODUCTION

Do you ever get the feeling that something in life just isnt right? Maybe its too hectic, painful or dull. Whatever it is, something seems to be missing, and we feel a subtle, simmering dissatisfaction in the background. In this book I will take you on a journey to the furthest reaches of the Universe and back, on a quest to quell this dissatisfaction. What will we discover? Well, no prizes for guessing that our most important discovery will be mindfulness. I invite you to explore two questions with me: thinking about our inner selves, what might that reveal about the Universe? Thinking about the Universe at large, what might we discover about ourselves?

Ill be touching upon ideas from physiology, psychology, spirituality and physics, but you dont need any particular knowledge of these subjects, nor do I assume that youve done any mindfulness practice before. Of course, if you have then so much the better.

Over the course of this book, I will encourage you to think about such things as: awareness; distractions; pain and suffering; how our mindsets and perceptions affect our experience; the reality of time and space; and what it is that distinguishes you from the rest of the Universe. However, this book is not about explaining concepts or theories, its about developing a first-hand, experiential knowledge of what it is to be in this vast Universe of ours. To that end, Ive included a number of guided mindfulness practices for you to follow. I strongly encourage you to do them, not just read them. I will invite you to examine a leaf, which will enable you as you think about the sunlight it photosynthesizes to contemplate the
