THEANCIENTTEACHING
OF THE33 STEPS
T he 33 Energies of Man was an ancient teaching. I believe it came originally from the Taoists in China. The 33 energies were said to flow from a higher plane into the earth dimensiona bit like a freeway built of lightto allow humans an exit out of the emotions and thought-forms of this evolution, into a higher consciousness. When I first heard of the concept from my old teacher, I found it hard to understand. The best way to explain it is that it is like a beam of light made of 33 strands, twisted around each other like a rope.
It is there, in effect, to give people inspiration and to help them on their sacred quest in life. It assists them in creating a consolidation of power, which in this teaching is called Fusion. Once the energy of Quest and Fusion have been established for a while, the 33rd energy comes out of that synapse. This is the energy of The Initiate.
I never liked the old definitions of the initiate; to me they always felt rather exclusive and elitist. Im not up for the concept of us and them; I find it rather sinister and a bit egotistical. And I dont like initiates who allude to powers. They do so, I feel, more for status and cash flow than spirituality. If you are an initiate, I want to see what you can do and, if you can do what you say you can do, I want you to teach me how to do it as well.
In fact, through the teaching of the 33 energies, I discovered that the energy of the initiate is not necessarily one of a great wizard, or shamanits more one of transcendence. It comes upon you gradually once you have gone beyond the emotions and thoughtforms common to this earth plane, and when you have let go of the ego somewhat and have embraced the Infinite Self within.
Yes, your perception grows, and often extraordinary things happen, but that is not the point of the exercise. The point of trying to attain a higher spiritual energy of this sort is so that it can set you free and liberate you from emotional disquietand so you can teach it to your brothers and sisters and set them free. That is the fairest way, in my view.
When I pondered on the ancient teaching, I wondered how one might translate 33 strands of light twisted around each other into something handy and useful that ordinary humans might use. I like energies that are down here, that help you transcend ordinary things, such as your loopy mother-in-law whos driving you crackers. Thats the kind of user-friendly mysticism I like.
Years ago, I decided to teach a weekend seminar on the 33 Energies of Man. I felt confident that I could translate the ephemeral nature of the ancient teaching into a practical method that might help people. So, I booked a fancy hotel in Washington, D.C., sent out brochures, and about 120 people showed up.
Thinking over the seminar I was about to present, I wrote the first ten steps out on little cards, but as I got to Step 11, my mind went completely blank. It was 7:30 A.M., I was in my room at the hotel, and the seminar was scheduled to start at nine. Panic!
As hard as I tried, I could not proceed from Step 10 through to the last three steps (31, 32, and 33), which I knew were Quest,Fusion, and The Initiate . I had a seminar that looked like a dough-nut with a bloody great hole in it! I was about to get up on stage and admit that I was a complete twit, and that Id invited a bunch of people to a weekend seminar that I couldnt figure out myselfa real bummer.
