A
ABRAHAM A SANTA CLARA (1644-1709)
wrote, when the Turkish invasion threatened Vienna and brought about general misery: After the Devil the Christians have no greater enemy than the Jew. They pray daily that God destroy us by pestilence and famine. Are there any greater scoundrels than Jews?
This vicious Augustinian monk mounted the pulpit in school and church to accuse the Jews of bringing the plague.
ABULAFIA, SAMUEL HA-LEVI (1320-1360)
Treasurer of Don Pedro of Castile. The Catholic clergy conspired against him and had him tortured to death.
ADVERSUS JUDAEOS
General term for anti-Semitic literature, especially that authored by the early Church Fathers. The most vicious of all was John Chrysostom (Saint) of the fifth century, who ran wild at the mouth against the Jews: They are rapists, pushy, deceitful, hucksters. Further, they are:... Lustful, rapacious, greedy, impure, debauchers.... A worthy predecessor of the Nazi Streicher.
AGOBARD, SAINT (779-840)
Archbishop of Lyon who directed his church activities to spread anti-Semitism. In his essayistic epistles he proved that the Jews were born slaves, were stealing Christian children and selling them to the Arabs, are accursed by God and should be so regarded by all Christians.
Again, many statements of this high-placed clergyman have found willing ears among modern anti-Semites.
AHLWANDT, HERMANN (b. 1846)
Journalistic anti-Semite of Prussia. Strongly supported by the Protestant clergy. Helped prepare ground for Nazism.
AKSAKOV, IVAN SERGEYEVICH (1823-1886)
Journalistic Russian anti-Semite, strongly supported by the Orthodox clergy.
AKTION REINHARD
The code name for the detailed plan to plunder the property of the Jews in Nazi Germany; so titled after its director, Reinhard Heydrich.
A guideline for this plan could be found in nation-wide expropriations by the Catholic Church in conjunction with various rulers. The Catholic Church provided many models for expropriation combined with execution or expulsion of Jews on repeated occasions. The Nazis merely streamlined an old operation.
ALBA, DUKE OF (1508-1582)
Repugnant anti-Semite of the Spanish aristocracy. Prohibited the printing of Hebrew books in the Netherlands. Similar prohibition is attributed to Joseph Stalin, a former Christian seminary student, who gave up the faith of his youth but not his anti-Semitic prejudices. The Stalin prohibition still holds good in the Soviet Union, minor exceptions for propaganda purposes to the contrary.
ALBERTUS MAGNUS (1206-1280)
A bishop of the Catholic Church and one of its revered philosophers, he presided over the tribunal that condemned the books of the Talmud in 1248 as pernicious literature. In the Hitler era German theologians often borrowed quotations from this trial, such as Talmud Jews.
ALBI
In this French town in 1320 the total Jewish population was annihilated by the Catholic authorities.
